There's a fan theory that almost every track on Live Era was re-recorded, however it's unknown if it's true.

Basically, most folks agree that it sounds re-recorded.  Rumors about it have circulated since the album came out because of Axl's voice.  But the band (or anyone connected to the band) has never confirmed it.

Certain members on this forum claim to know insiders who have confirmed it is re-recorded.  I personally find at least one of those members trustable, but he has wisely not revealed the identity of his insider (else his insider would likely no longer be an insider).  My personal take is that until it is confirmed by someone who actually knows (as opposed to one of us passing along info from an anonymous insider), it shouldn't be accepted as fact.  But that said, go listen to it for yourself - it isn't hard to form a personal opinion about the matter.

I believe it was re-recorded.

I was in New York and some one said that Axl was at a studio recording vocals.  If you listen to the sources of the tracks you can tell that the instruments are the same but the vocals are different.  For instance listen to estranged from Tokyo 92 and then listen to it on Live Era.  You will notice that some parts of the vocal are rerecorded and some are from the show however the music is exactly the same.  Especially in the beginning where his voice origionally did something funny.  Believe what you want but test it for yourself.  Axl never much sounded like that before 94.

On some tracks i've never heard Axl sing that like that on any bootlegs, and I have some from each year. And also, his voice doesn't break and sounds the same on most tracks, as if he did it all in one session. Not through the years

Yesterday was taken from Las Vegas 92, It wasn't re-recorder 'cuase I have a single called Yesterday released in 92, and the set list is:
Yesterday (live version, the same than live era)
 Yesterday studio version
Knockin' on heaven's door (live at the marquee)
 November Rain (studio version)

If you compare the two versions of Yesterdays live, however, you'll notice differences, such as the mixing of the back-up singers.

Same thing if you compare the songs on Live Era to bootlegs of the concerts they were taken from.  SCOM, for example - the vocals differ from the actual bootleg of the show.  It could be re-recorded; it could be vocals from another old-era show super-imposed over the band's performance; it could be digitally altered.  No one knows.  While I suspect all three techniques were used on the album, there is no official confirmation any way.
