Why does Axl use "China democracy" as the title?

If it had a new title I think it would peak more people's positive curiosities than an ancient title for a controversitial CD that has way too much negative connotations associated with it, jmho

If I remember correctly, Axl wrote chinese democracy (the song) after watching some film, can't remember what it was called though.

He wrote the song after watching the movie "Kundun."  Which came out in 1997.  So I guess the song's around 7 or 8 years old now.  Around 1999 the rumored title was "Oh My God."  

I agree Chinese Democracy was a cool title when it was first revealed in 2000.  Now it's kind of become symbolic for disappointment and failure.  (Because of the disastrous 2002 tour & half a decade delay in the release)  He should call it something else now.  Make a fresh start.  

Plus it's become sort of a joke.  With Offspring threatening to call their last album "Chinese Democracy.... You Snooze, you lose."  

Axl could call it GnR IV considering this is his fourth studio album and fourth incarnation of the group.

Unfortunately i agree. It was the best title if it came out in 01. Now i don't think the album could live up to it's name.

I think the title is symbolic of duality in opposition of itself, like the word "guns" vs. "roses", representing two different poles, as with "chinese" vs. "democracy".  Axl did however speak of his interest in the topic itself, so it is likely to have dual meaning, part literal, part symbolic.  

"Democracy" being diametrically opposed to the word "Chinese" (in today’s context) may one day change altogether, hopefully due to an internal movement and not some outside force trying to impose it, which would be an oxymoron.  While China struggles for more rights, some of our many rights here in the USA are being taken away.  It is kind of funny how we come from opposite political systems and how we are moving toward one another.  China, struggling for liberty, and the US, blinded by the luxuries of freedom to the point that no one fights for it when it is taken away from us (i.e. â€" Patriot Act).  We take this for granted and don't even bother to question it, very much representative of how politically numb our country is.

Where China is controlled by state power, the US is controlled by private power (i.e. - corporate).  Business interests control the government via monetary and influential lobby power,  (i.e. â€" General Electric alone has 700 lobbyist that can and have lobbied for war as a means to increase production and profits from their biggest return potential, which is modern warfare electrical systems).  Business interests also control the media (i.e. â€" General Electric owns NBC, but owning isn’t even necessary when advertising dollars determine media survival).  The media, representing corporate interests, since that is where their cash-flow comes from, tells us what to think and what not to think, programs us to consume, spend and exercise credit.  Political debate is allowed to occur as long as it doesn’t hurt business.  It can be directed at the Government even, which is fine, but it cannot be opposed to the interest of business, otherwise the media outlets will lose their advertising dollars in lieu of broadcasting anti-business subject matter.  Who wants to pay to advertise through a network that hurts sales?  No one, which is why media is a slave to business.  Every year through this private power, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.  The US has one of the largest gaps between the rich and the poor in the entire world.  This poor population is kept under control by non-violent means, as you can see by the fact that the US has the highest percentage of people worldwide that are in prison.  You may have a greater chance of dying in China, but you certainly have a greater chance of being put in prison in the US â€" this is documented fact (as much as the media sweeps it under the rug).  This in turn keeps the restless masses, that are most affected by the plutocracy, out of the political arena.  The system works for those in power and still allows for individual freedoms.  Rather than control by force, it is control by influence.

I really like the name... its ironic... has a contrast and in some way funny... its a joke to chinese politicians....

And I think they should stick to the name... and not change it... We've been talking about it for a decade now... and as someting special... the best rock album... etc. etc... so I think it must come out as Chinese Democracy .... and even if it would be called different... to me.. in my heart it will be called chinese democracy...

allthough... the song chinese democracy isn't that good for me... actually its the worst besides silkworms and Rhiad&Bedueins... and as we know it these last two won't be on the album... so I like chinese democracy the less from all the new songs... but the name rocks!

On the other hand.... this could also be a simbol or a metaphor for American democracy .... Cause USA and their deffinicion of democracy is rather strange to me... trying to impose different political systems to other countries is just not acceptable... and with Bush's administration... well... you get the idea...  so the name could also mean dissagreament with americas policy by ling it Chinese...

but anyway... I doubt Axl saw it that way...
