ROCK IS DEAD. (Well, maybe not...)
« on: April 06, 2006, 09:21:46 PM »
Some of you seem to be lost with the newer music that has emerged from the late 90's to current music...

Here's a news flash:
ROCK IS DEAD.

But not erased.

At least the "rock" you once heard in the 70's, 80's and early 90's.  Those bands have moved on, and some have refused to let go.  Meanwhile, there is an entire revolution of newer-style music to emerge.  These newer bands have been MAJORLY influenced by the bands you have all loved. (GNR, Metallica, U2, etc.)

Rap/Hip-hop will stay strong on the market for years to come, but isn't the ONLY prevailant (sp?) music in our Major market.

Emo -is the IN-thing. (Emo- basically slowed down punk overtones, with melodic, even "whiny" vocals..) Emo, (short for "emotional")
Bands to check: Thursday, Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday

Hardcore -(faster aggressive punk w/ heavily distorted guitars, heavy metal overtones, and thrash breakdowns, for those who dont know), is the domintant "heavy" thing going on. Lots of people also credit Metallica (before black album).
Bands to check: Throwdown, Terror, Hatebreed

Metal-Core - Basically a newly-invented heavy metal, with a lot of influence coming from the "hardcore" scene.  The guitars are flooded with drop tuning, and heavy breakdowns are almost essential.
Bands to check: Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage, Unearth

Other MORE MAINSTREM bands I will note, that cross these barriers, combining the above-mentioned genres:

Atreyu- combines the hardcore & metal-core sound, with old-school hard rock elemnts.

Avenged Sevenfold- combines the heavy-core metal, punk rock sound, but utilizes a lot more of the "heavy metal/hard rock/glam" sound, a la~ the late 80's Hollywood scene. (GNR, Motley Crue, etc.)

Alkaline Trio- combines the basic punk rock/Rock n' roll/Emo elements, with a nice gift-wrapped package..

Thrice- combines the aggressive punk-rock style with melodic (some say emo) overtones.

As I Lay Dying - persistant heavy metal, with a blend of hardcore.

Silverstein - Most people label their style as "screamo," which blends your melodic (emo) sound with your aggressive hardcore screaming vocals, and heavy breakdowns...

Hawthorne Heights - see Silverstein.

Fall Out Boy - Think Green Day, but prettier. Yes, prettier.

There are TONS of new bands, most of them are just second and third rate copies of the bands I included.. But if you search through the rubbish, you may find good, solid bands.  And if you ask them who their influences are, you are going to suddenly find, after all these years where these "old" bands have disappeared to...  They may not ever re-emerge to the mainstream, but the sounds of these band can be found within the newer bands, and this new sound.

INFLUENCE.

Some other bands that i PERSONALLY recommend checking out, that have NOT been mentioned:
Glassjaw
Finch
Deftones
36 Crazyfists

Hopefully this helps a few of you out..

Here's a news flash:
ROCK IS IN A COMA.

But not shitty.

At least the "rock" you once heard in the 70's, 80's and early 90's.  Those bands have moved on, and some have refused to let go.  Meanwhile, there is an entire revolution of shit-style music to emerge.  These newer bands have been NOT AT ALL influenced by the bands you all love. (GNR, Metallica, U2, etc.)

Rap/Hip-hop will stay strong on the market for years to come, but it isn't the ONLY shitty music in our Major market.

Emo sucks

Hardcore sucks

Metal-Core sucks

Other MORE MAINSTREM bands  suck

Atreyu- combines shit & shit, with more shitty elements

Avenged Sevenfold- are complete shit and they sound NOTHING like gnr like so many say.

Alkaline Trio- Emo elements =shit and/or suck

Thrice- to many people like these shit-heads

As I Lay Dying - persistant heavy shit with a blend of suck

Silverstein - Most people label their style as "shit". They are right.

Hawthorne Heights - see shit and/or suck

Fall Out Boy - Think Shit, but sittier. Yes, shittier.

There are TONS of new bands, most of them are as shitty as the bands I included.. But if you search through the shit, you will find more shit.  And if you ask them who their influences are, you are going to get a pile of indie shit.  They hopefully wont come  to the mainstream, but the shitty sounds of these bands can be found within the newer bands, and this new shit.

INFLUENCE.

Some other bands that i PERSONALLY recommend you avoid, that have NOT been mentioned:
Glassjaw
Finch
Deftones

alexisonfire
nickelback

Hopefully this helps a few of you out..

Music and Movies are struggling because no one is fucking creative, i think nearly every film at the cinema is a remake, king kong, charlie and the choclate factory, spiderman for example. And in music it's shit too, 2003 -2004 was a good year, BLINK 182 SPLIT UP YEAH!!!!! and then some faggort spoiled it by shootin dimebag on stage. And then green day pop up with the most commericial peice of shit i've ever heard, which then influences bands like fall out boy and my chemical romance to sell out and become one of the over produced boy bands. The only good thing i can remember in music is when pink floyd got back together for live8.

I think at the moment, the amount of good metal bands out is excellent,

Trivium, Wednesday 13, The autumn Offering, Deathstars, Opeth, Dragonforce, Soulfly etc. the list goes on, rock/metal isn't dead, you just have to look in the right place. :D

yup A7X was the only band I liked that you listed, I guess the Deftones have some songs I like too.  but I think you should stop promoting Hawthorne Heights, Falloutboy and shit like that on this board because I'm pretty sure about 95% of peeps on here hate their guts as I do.  I would rather have a construction site next to my house than listen to the worst band of all time AKA Hawthorne Heights, damn if only I was a serial killer, they would be the first on my list.
