IRN! what a load of wankers:)
at least no bashing

Guns n' Roses return to the UK
The band premiere four new songs

Guns n' Roses made their long awaited live return to the UK tonight (June 7) for a special warm up show before their Download Festival appearance this weekend.

Singer Axl Rose - the only remaining member of the original line-up - returned to the Hammersmith Apollo for the first time in nearly 20 years for a set peppered with classic hits and four new tracks.

Typically, Axl turned up over an hour and 10 minutes late with his seven piece band.

But he treated the crowd to a 130 minute set made up of fan favourites 'Welcome To The Jungle', 'Sweet Child O' Mine', 'Mr Brownstone', 'Patience' and Use Your Illusion tracks 'You Could Be Mine' and 'November Rain'.

His band also played new tracks - 'Madagascar','Better', 'The Blues' and 'IRN' - from the long awaited 'Chinese Democracy' album.

The show, which was watched by Queen guitarist Brian May and model Elle Macpherson, saw Axl make a number of costume changes in between spectacular pyrotechniques.

During the Bob Dylan cover 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door', the singer also handed his mic over for a member of the audience to sing.

He was later joined by former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach for 'My Michelle' before the band eventually wrapped up the show with 'Paradise City'.

Guns n' Roses played:

'Welcome To The Jungle'
'It's So Easy'
'Mr Brownstone'
'Live And Let Die'
'Sweet Child O' Mine'
'Madagascar'
'Better'
'You Could Be Mine'
'Knockin' On Heaven's Door'
'The Blues'
'IRN'
'Outta Get Me'
'November Rain'
'My Michelle'
'Patience'
'Night Train'
'Paradise City'

Two hours may be a blink of an eye to a group without an album of original material since 1991, but in a sweltering Hammersmith Apollo, two hours was an eternity. Scheduled to come on stage at 8.45, Guns N'Roses finally emerged at 10.45.

If that and the sludgy sound that the road crew had had ample time to perfect, were not sufficient contempt for the audience, I'm far from convinced I actually saw Guns N'Roses.

Singer Axl Rose was certainly present. With his ginger dreadlocks tied into an unruly ponytail, a half-hearted goatee and a succession of tasteless shirts unbuttoned to reveal, somehow reassuringly, a sunburnt chest, he resembled nothing less than a Stars In Their Eyes Mick Hucknall.

Behind Rose, though, were seven thorns. With the arguable exceptions of long-standing keyboardist Dizzy Reed and terrific drummer Brain, they were no more Guns N'Roses than they were potholers.

Rose found it necessary to employ three lead guitarists. Collectively (let alone individually), they were not worthy of tuning the strings of Slash, the band's spirit and direction until he fled in 1996.

Disastrously, Rose permitted all three solo stage time as he changed outfits. After the first five minutes of Richard Fortus's mind-numbing efforts, I lost the will to live.

Even so, Rose's duet with Skid Row's Sebastian Bach on My Michelle was thrilling and Sweet Child O'Mine still sends shivers down the sternest of spines, but November Rain, so breathtaking on record, was more June Drizzle, while the confetti and shower of sparks that accompanied the closing Paradise City could not obscure the fact that this band have surrendered almost everything that once made them great.

I thoroughly agree with the man. I've been a big Gn'R fan since 87 and I was disgusted by Rose and co. last night.

lets see, where to begin....

only the second gig I've been too and seen the band booed.

well, they had
- a bloke with a guitar, who looked a bit like Slash
- another bloke with a guitar, who looked a bit like Izzy
- Axl Rose, who looked disturbingly like Mick Hucknall

Musically the band were tight enough and Axl's voice was pretty strong, but I couldn't care less.

In 16 years of going to gigs I have NEVER been handed a legal disclaimer informing me that the band own any pictures, recordings etc. that I may or not make of the gig. There was a tv/film camera outside and they did a bit of filming inside too I think, so maybe the reason for the disclaimer is caught up in that.

Though I bet they won't be showing the footage of a theatre full of Gn'R fans eager and excited to see the band at 8 - 9 o'clock, turning into a chorus of boo's between then and 10.40 and people starting to leave 15 minutes into the set because of the time. They kept us waiting until 10.40 before taking the stage and I was chatting to a few people around me who had to leave before they even appeared.

I've been a massive Gn'R fan since 87, I was really really looking forward to this gig (Gn'R in a small venue.... wow!) and now.. I haven't stopped cursing Axl Rose since about 10 o'clock last night.

Judging by last night - the delay and the new songs - when the band split up Slash and Izzy took all the talent and left Axl with the ego.

If they'd come onstage at a decent time it would have been a great evening. As it stands, Mr. Rose, whilst you were backstage (presumably masturbating over pictures of yourself) you lost a few fans.

Wanker. I hold you in the same comtempt you showed for us last night.

i'm just really pissed off - you're a guns n' roses fan and don't like them being slagged off - fair enough, i was too.

something nice..... ok

- they put on a good show (the first 3-4 songs were awesome).

- Axl's vocals were a lot lot better than the bootlegs have had me thinking - I was very impressed.

- the band were pretty tight and sounded good (though around You Could be Mine i thought the sound engineer had keeled over and knocked all the controls on the mixing desk to cock)

maybe that got sorted out, i don't know - i, like many people around me, had to leave part way into the show to be able to get home, so I ended up paying £80 that I couldn't really afford - and i did so purely because it was Gn'R and i fucking love the music - for 2 tickets to see a band who couldn't be arsed coming on stage at a decent time.

i was really looking forward to it, i'd been jumping around like a schoolboy bursting for a pee since the show was announced.
now, i'd prefer to burn my money than buy the new album and give it to that man.

i might just fuck off as well (but where would the fun be in that ?)

if you're talking about the evening standard guy then he was a bit harsh on the band once they actually turned up.

if you're talking about me..

i bought appetite the month it came out, i bought lies the day it came out and i bunked off school to get the illusions @ 9 am the morning they came out. i've got everything else, i've got videos, i've got bootlegs (though don't tell Axl)

i spent my teenage years covered in gn'r t-shirts and with my walls covered in gn'r posters.

i've been having kittens waiting for this gig - and i've been waiting (almost) 20 years to see them (and in those 20 years i've seen a good 100-200 bands all of whom (Beastie Boys - and they got all of brixton academy booing them, and Manic Street Preachers (Generation Terrorists tour) excepted) have managed to turn up and do a show when they're supposed to

did i go "to the show with the intention of writing shit" ?

i went to the show with the intention of hearing a band i have loved since i started listening to music play classic songs that i still listen to this day.

as far as i'm concerned Axl couldn't have shown more contempt for the audience if he'd wiped his arse on us.

edit: ok... i'm starting to calm down a bit now. yes, they were good when they played :-) but.... still totally pissed-off. i left around 11.30, didn't get home until 2 in the morning (and had to get up at 6 today for work) and still only saw about half the set.

Anyone who says that show was less than fucking amazing was in another country.

Also, anyone who thought they would be on time should probably do 1 minute of research on the band they pay money to see.

By the way - Ron Thal was fuckin outstanding. He ran around a lot too!
