"The Big 4" Piano Songs
« on: June 26, 2006, 04:53:59 PM »
I was reading an old interview Axl did with Kerrang... what do you think the other 4 songs could be??  Estranged is probably one of them, perhaps Breakdown.  Could The Blues possibly date back to then?

K : This song, ‘November Rain’, I read somewhere that you said if it wasn’t recorded to your complete satisfaction you would quit the music business....

A : That was then. At that time it was the most important song to me.

K : Were you serious, though, when you said you’d quit the music business if it wasn’t done right?

A : Yeah! That’s the fuckin’ truth, allright. But the worst part of it is, like, if you wanna look at it in a negative way, I’ve got four of these motherfuckers now, man ! I don’t know how I wrote these, but I like ‘em better than ‘November rain’! And I’m gonna crush that motherfuckin’ song, man ! But now I’ve got four of ‘em I gotta do, and they’re all big songs. We play them and we get chills.

Estranged was a mother of a song according to Axl. He struggled like fuck to get that to perfection.

These 4 songs would be songs Axl wrote and performed on piano AFTER November Rain was done.

November Rain was like...fully written out in the late 80s, d00d.  Axl had the song in his head since the mid 80s.

The big four were NR, Estranged, Breakdown and Locomotive.

I get the feeling that A LOT of songs were written possibly scribbled just at some random place and time during the post-Appetite and during the Illusion period. There are MANY, MANY, MANY songs that have been written by them and even some of them nameless, as it appeared one time when they played in '86 I can recall a nameless song that was never again done, but I think you might be able to find it on youtube somewhere.

Without You did turn into Estranged.
November Rain was always November Rain.
Breakdown was breakdown.

Now a song to remember is 14 Years, that had a lot of good piano work in it as well.

I believe that you will see that the piano and eletric guitar will combine once again in Chinese Democracy and display perhaps the best combination since the Illusion period again. I feel that IRS, Madagascar, Better, The Blues, etc. are just the tip of the iceberg. As we continue to hear, they haven't even pulled out the big guns yet.  :unibrow:

In the interview Axl doesnt refer to the piano. So I believe he is talking about epics. Which would mean

November Rain, Estranged, Coma, Breakdown or locomotive

BUT there is an inscription in the end of November Rain video clip saying "based on Del James story 'Without you'"...
So...?

yeah- the video was, but apparently Axl wrote Estranged without reading that story, but then when he read it he thought that song was like the song in the story or something.

I dont think it would have been 14years either. Izzy co wrote it, and i had it down of more of an Izzy song in my mind. I think Axl would have been refering to songs which were solo (for him), like NR, EST ect.
