The new band
« on: September 16, 2006, 12:02:03 AM »
I've been a hard core gnr fan for a good 15 plus years now. I must say the new music namely better, the blues, and madagascar all kick ass. I.R.S. is ok, Oh my God is kind of weak. I haven't heard good enough versions of the other songs to state my opinion. I have been waiting pretty damn patiently for new material for at least ten years. I saw the older version of the new band in 2002, and it wasn't that great. Axl threw the mic in the air after knockin' on heavens door and we got screwed out of paradise city and at least one more encore song. I am an optimistic person and I think chinese democracy is gonna kick ass, but it needs to be released. THIS YEAR! If it doesn't come out this year I will lose respect for one of my icons, Axl. I think the new band has the potential to carry on the gnr name but they won't surpass the originial band. In alot of ways the new band is more talented, Bumblefoot, Fink, and Fortus are all great guitarists. The originial band is one of the greatest rock bands ever, so to think the new band will surpass them is kind of moronic. I hope chinese democracy sells ten million and is #1 for a year, but gnr's opus will always be appetite. The classic band had the right message, right songs, right image at the right time. They are the band that bridges the gap between 80's hair metal, hard core metal, punk, and grunge. I think those reasons more than any individiual member is why they were so popular. They represented sex, drugs, and rock and roll better than anyone since led zeppelin and nobody has been even close since then. Don't get me wrong I am just as excited as anyone for the new band and album I'm just being a realist.

I see the band in four distinct era's
1. 86-90 the original band: undoubtably the best of gnr, if you see or hear any footage from this time it's hard to disagree.
2. 91-94 the illusion era: still very good but you can tell fortune and fame has gone to the bands head, exspecialy Axl, and lets be honest Axl doesn't sound all that good during this time. I'd rank it third.
3. 95-04 the lost era: The worst the band had to offer. I saw them in 02 and it wasn't very good I'm glad bucket fuck is gone, good riddence.
4. 05-present: very good potentially great only time will tell from what I've heard I'd rank it #2

Buckethead is one of the most respected shredders out there, my intellectual friend. Oh, and his parts are still very much on Chinese Democracy, please listen to Nottingham Lace and the like before you trash him, he's easily in the top 10 guitarists out there right now...

Don't start another new vs old thread, because the new band will always win, GNR's opus was Use Your Illusions ('till Chinese Democracy comes out), the best, most creative songs lie there and anyone who says different is ignorant, I've had enough of you guys who've "been fans for 15 years" and are on the verge of giving up just as they release the CD, you know what? who cares! there's enough teenagers keen on 80's rock to account for all you oxygen wasting fools out there.

If you wanna compare era's though, Axl of 06 is the best, but the rythm section was in it's prime in 02, buddy. Buckethead gave this band alot more than people give him credit for   .

if the band kicks so much ass, why did it take them 10 years to make the album?
and it's not Axls perfectionism to blame.

well taking 10 years also doesnt guarante that it will be good.
well if they are as talented as some say, it wouldnt take them this much.

I agree that time doesn't equate to quality.  But...."good" is relatative and I think that's why the things we constitute as "good" changes over time, with the exception of those who can achieve the timeless albums, such as AFD.  As Axl once said, part of what made it so great was that they had been playing those songs for 4 years and had time to perfect them.  You know when you get involved in something and it keeps growing and then you look back and think how shitty something was in the beginning?  Whether Axl admits it or not, this process is heavily influenced by your ability to stop the growth process and say "it's good enough".  For Axl, nothing is ever good enough.  Fortunately, as he put it, it also gives him the sense to say this or that isn't a good idea, thus hopefully avoiding a flop.  Talent is talent, you're right, but I don't think it's easy to translate ingenuity into art without refining it to the point that the final product mirrors exactly the image in your brain.

I also recon that if the band hadn't changed around members so much the album might have surfaced earlier!

well if he made more songs like IRS and Silkworms, they'd suck no matter how much time passes by.

At least he's testing the waters and exploring rather than blindly rushing into something.  You may be surprised not to see IRS or Silkworms on CD, who knows.
