Nah, there are still enough "real" fans (of GNR and of music in general) who continue to purchase CD's because they know that doing so supports the artists, and because they like to have the liner with art/pics/lyrics/notes/etc.

K lets see here, the artist gets 0.99$ per cd sold.
Now, split that 8 ways, around 12 cents. That would be about how much each band member got for each chinese democracy sold.
However, for AFD lets say, royalties also go to Izzy, Duff, Slash, Adler.
Buying CDs is the biggest rip ever, if you're stupid enough to buy them, go ahead. Axl is a miltiomillionaire anyway, but you can go ahead and give 19 dollars to the record company, who do nothing but pressure the band and make the CD come out worse in the long run.
i come here to flame

I could give a shit whether bands turn into millionaires because of their work.  why should they?.  if you can make the average american income from music then you shouldn't be complaining.  (same goings for pro sports, but that another story)  funny thing is at one time the music industry thought records would destroy the industry because no one would go to the shows anymore.

How do you figure on "0.99$"?  It is more than that...  Going by the 2000 IDC (International Data Corporation) study (http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/q22000/gee2000830002247.htm), and bolstered by the findings of the same organization's 2005 study (http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=33394), which states that "U.S. music consumers are slowly adopting new digital audio technologies ... yet they continue to depend on the tried and true, namely CDs and FM radio,":

Revenue from sales of audio CDs is currently split (on the average) as follows:

Record label: 39%
Retailer: 15%
Distribution: 15%
Print/Press: 15%
Publisher/Composer: 8%
Artist: 8%

Let's say GNR's CD will retail for $15.00.

Being as GNR composes as well as performs their own music, they get 16% of that.  Actually, since these percentages are six years old, I will concede to you an additional 2%.  So we're giving them 14% of each CD sold.

14% of each $15.00 CD is $2.10.  Split 8 ways, that's 0.2625$ per person.  Multiply that by 1,000,000 and it's 262,500$.  Maybe you would be "stupid enough" to throw away 262,500$.  I wouldn't.  And I don't mind contributing to my favorite artists' take-home pay.  It's like thanking them for all the enjoyment their music gives me.  And besides, I like the art/pics/lyrics/notes/etc.

A high demand for your work leads to a high salary.

(In Europe) very talented soccer stars can be the deciding factor to a club's success -> high transfer money + salary.
People fill up cinema's to see Tom Cruise -> Tom Cruise gets a big paycheck.
People fill up a arena to see Axl -> Axl gets paid big.

And if I were some bigshot enterprise IT consultant, I would have a big paycheck as well. Too bad I ain't  :o
It doesn't matter who you are, if you only run and hide.. it's just a waste of time.

yes, but to a point.
tiger woods made $80.3 million in 2004, now he is successful, but you can't say that he needs that much.  would it be all that bad if he "only" made $500,000, or even $1 million.  it sure wouldn't keep me up at night.
