The 15-year-old male student was stabbed at University High School Thursday as school was letting out has died, according to Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary.

Jim Solomons from the Orange County Sheriff's Office said the incident began with a verbal altercation during the lunch period between two students. It escalated when school let out. A fight broke out between the victim and the stabbing suspect, during which the victim was stabbed.

The victim was taken to Florida Hospital East in critical condition after the incident. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Sheriff Beary says the incident occurred on the east side of campus.

The high school is located near the University of Central Florida in Orange County.

According to Solomons, deputies located the 17-year-old suspect in a classroom. He is currently being detained. The knife suspected in the stabbing has also been found.

The school and buses were placed on lockdown after the incident as deputies searched for their suspect. They have since been allowed to leave.

Here's an update in case you haven't checked....

A 17-year-old has been charged with first degree murder in the death of a 15-year-old University High School student.

Jim Solomons from the Orange County Sheriff's Office said the incident began with a verbal altercation during the lunch period between two students.

It escalated when school let out. A fight broke out between the victim, identified as Michael Nieves, and the stabbing suspect, 17-year-old Kelvin De La Cruz, during which Nieves was stabbed with a pocket knife.

Friends say the two had been interested in the same girl.

Nieves was taken to Florida Hospital East in critical condition after the incident. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to Solomons, deputies located the De La Cruz in a classroom. He has been transported to the Orange County Sheriff's Office Central Operations Complex and has been charged with first degree murder. He will be tried as an adult.

The school and buses were placed on lockdown after the incident as deputies searched for their suspect. They have since been allowed to leave.

The sheriff says the violence in classrooms is just out of control and that parents need to take a bigger role.

Sheriff Kevin Beary"Parents taking the initiative to talk to their kids about gun, knives, violence, and drugs,” Sheriff Beary said. “Cause if you're not taking the time and talking to your kids about it, who are your responsibility? Who is? The street thug out here?"

Right now, the penalty for having a knife at school is a 10-day suspension.

Deputies though say the school is safe.
