In that NY Times (and later Q Magazine) article, it said he cancelled the tour because he was refused entry to some nightclub in NYC, after MSG because he was wearing fur.
So he got all pissy anc cancelled the tour.

hey axltwin I remeber back in that time(i wasn't a gnr fan but a guy with i worked was) and he and his friend got their ass raped by the cancelled show in vancouver and he told me that reason also! about a coat that wasn't allowed into some bar may it be the REAL reason?

I had heard the 2002 tour was cancelled because Clear Channel had demanded Axl return a substantial portion of the advance they had given him. Don't know if it's true or not, just what i recall hearing shortly after the tour was cancelled. ***It could also be that after the stellar performance @ MSG (which i was fortunate to attend 12/05/02) the band had realized it was time to return to California to work on finishing the record(s). That being said, i don't believe they would cancel the remaining dates. Not Axl's style to screw over the bands fans contrary to popular belief.

Groupies started to go after Buckethead instead of Axl, Axl got pissed, and decided to kick Buckethead and quit the whole tour until the groupies came back to him which is now in 2006
