Richards Apologizes for Racial Slurs

LOS ANGELES -- Michael Richards said Monday he spewed racial epithets during a stand-up comedy routine because he lost his cool while being heckled and not because he's a bigot. "For me to be at a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry," the former "Seinfeld" co-star said during a satellite appearance for David Letterman's "Late Show."

"I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane about this," Richards said, his tone becoming angry and frustrated as he defended himself. A clip from the show played on CBS before "Late Show" aired Monday night.

Richards described himself as going into "a rage" over the two audience members who interrupted his act Friday at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Richards responded to the black hecklers with repeated use of the "n word" and profanities.

Jerry Seinfeld, who had issued a statement saying he was "sick over this horrible, horrible mistake" and calling it offensive, was scheduled as a Letterman guest Monday. He encouraged Richards to make a satellite appearance to talk about the incident, a CBS publicist said.

wow, they really took Jerry's comments out of context.  what he really said was,  "I am sick over this. I'm sure Michael is also sick over this horrible, horrible mistake. It is so extremely offensive. I feel terrible for all the people who have been hurt."

yea I don't like to see people's feelings hurt, in general.  but in this case I think the guy had it coming for heckling him like that.

Dude, I've done stand-up comedy, had to do a pretty short show as part of one of my elective classes at university last year, before we did it we got to meet and chat with a couple of professional stand-ups to ask for advice, what to expect, etc.  Each of them told us the same thing, the first rule of being a stand-up comedian

"Always expect hecklers, and always make sure you have something funnier to say back to them"

what you don't do is lose your temper, what you definitely never do is lose it then attack someone based on the colour of their skin.  If you can't deal with hecklers, don't be a comedian.

And apparently there was a group of about 5 or 6 people there together, all slagging him, saying he wasn't funny, out of them only 1 was black, and he's the guy Richards singled out to attack, it doesn't matter what anyone says to try and back him up or explain his actions, what he did was absolutely indefensible.

I mean I put on some kids show and they had some steriotypical Italian guy with the name "guido" I mean CMON!!

Imagine if they had a black guy using that derogatory term..

I think theres racial double standards these days...

I do think Kramer was wrong though.. he flipped out.. He apologized though and I think people should take it to heart. sometimes when you explode you just I dunno dont think before you speak..

It's a fucking word for fucks sakes, one simple word that manages to cause so many problems.

How about everyne drops the history associated with the word, and it won't mean shit anymore.  Or better yet, everyone stop using the word, white, black, yellow, who gives a fuck, if everyone stops using it then it'll be forgotten.  One of the reasons I think that black people are defiently to be blamed partly for racism nowadays, stop fucking using the word amongst themselves and it'll be forgotten about.
