Well I didn't hear about this before. But they said that Teeth Metal came after Heavy Metal (I'm not 100% sure as I missed some parts of the documentary)
In opposition to the "dark" bands like Black Sabbath, the guys of Teeth Metal bands were smiling all the time (showing their teeth) like Van Halen.

Isn't that like happy metal? Twisted sister and co?

THEY ARE METAL

you make me laugh.

you have no idea what metal is now do you?

guns n roses/poison/motley crue are far from metal...

guns n roses aint rock n roll either

guns n roses = hard rock
(wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns_n_roses - hard rock / sleaze rock)

listen to Nevermore, that's metal. :)

edit:
and oh btw. you see guns n roses and other bands classified under 'metal' lotsa times, its just because people who don't listen to this loud kinda music think this stuff is metal. they don't even know there's a category named Hard Rock, or Glam Metal, or Sleaze Metal, and so on. in the 70's led zeppelin may have been called heavy metal as well, but nowadays we don't dare it call heavy metal...thats rock n roll.

Black Sabbath on the other hand is metal from the very first song they released i think.

You guys don't seem to grasp that the definition of metal has changed over the years, bands such as Led Zep used to be considered as 'metal'/hard rock.
Dont take this the wrong way Karin but your friends look like they are wild in bed, I mean pure filthy.

Spin magazine had a great a great article last year (Axl was on the cover) called The Metal Years and it went in a fucking hilarious yet strangely logical description about what bands are like what kind of metal such as Metallca and Judas Priest being titanium cuz of how tough it was and the color it turns while burning. The pussy bands like Poison or Bon Jovi were like Aluminum i think with a pinkish glow at burning temps whereas Guns N Roses were in between like Copper i think.

Damn i wish i could find the article but it kinda made sense in a fucked up way.
What this means to me is more than i know you believe."

In this day in age GnR is hard rock. They may have been metal in the 80's but not anymore. Everybodies opinion will differ though and like Karin stated the definitions of the genres of music has changed over the years so what is metal today may not be metal tommorrow.

I think one of the main reasons many people do not like to classify bands into genres is because any good band experiments with different styles from the beginning (eg., GnR), and if they do not from the get-go, then if they are to have any longevity, they will evolve and incorporate different styles as time goes by (eg., the Stones).

Interestingly, in the field of cancer research while we often try to perform chemotherapy assays to determine which drugs a tumor will be sensitive to, we usually fail in this regard. Rather it is much easier to predict what drugs a given tumor will be resistant to - this is because most solid cancers in human beings are chemoresistant so by Bayes Theorem (i.e., laws of probability) it will be easier to predict drug resistance than drug sensitivity.

Following the lines of the example above, if we apply these principles to rock bands, it will be easier to state what genre a band does not fall into rather than what genre it does. As an example, we can easily state that The Cure are not metal, nor are they hard rock. It is much more difficult to summarize what they are - are they gothic, progressive, deppessing?

In my opinion the Stones were RnR, while Aerosmith, Scorpions, AC/DC and GnR were hard rock. HOWEVER, during the 1980s (early 80s for AC/DC and the Scorps; mid-80s for GnR and the resurgence of Aerosmith), the initial audiences for these bands were essentially metal audiences. Then once GnR and Aerosmith got MTV exposure their audiences expanded to include more mainstream listeners.

Other RnR bands would include: The Who, The Doors, Lynnard Skynnard
Other hard rock bands would include: UFO, early Rush, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin & Deep Purple.
Metal bands: Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Metallica.
