GnR Guitarist Comparisons
« on: December 22, 2006, 06:47:55 PM »

Since there's no news incoming, no shows and pretty much fuck all going on. I made a huge GnR guitarist side-by-side comparison, much like the one floating around on youtube already. This one is more extensive and has better selected bootlegs, however.

Enjoy.

Slash rules tonewise and feelingwise. And it's just... Organic. He can't fuck up, and even when he fucks up, it fits.
In "Nightrain" Slash was the best, ron came in close second. Bucket sucked balls.

November rain: Slash owned. Literally. Finck just can't fucking BEND and VIBRATO. It sounds fake, it sucks.

Chinese democracy: The Bucket version was better, Ron did an overkill.

Knocking on Heaven's door: Must be kiddin, right? That song was written FOR slash, Bucket did a pretty good version also, it sounds good, and unusual. But ron was better then BH.

NR outro: Slash's sound could have been better. I have heard better bootlegs of this song... Slash just CANT fuck up. Ron started out great, but OVERDID it with the arpeggios and the shred at the end.

Nightrain outro: Flawless performance from Slash... BH killed the feeling in it. great playing, technically speaking, but it's not his style. Ron overkilled, again, with the tapping shit. Otherwise, it was pretty good not considering that. Ron needs to learn how to control himself, he could be a legendary player, he needs some control.

But all in all, give it up for: SLASH!

Axl tried to get the best guitarists possible.
He was succesful, but he didn't consider the fact that experimental guitarists will suck with the kick-ass hard rock playing. They play interesting stuff, but not in the right songs.

Slash does fuck up and it doesn't always fit, he is human y'know. All the Slash recordings are from Live Era too so he has an advantage there. For me:

SCOM: Slash

Brownstone: Finck

Nightrain: Fortus & Bucket

CD: Finck & Bucket

NR: Slash

NR outro: Ron

KOHD: Slash/Bucket about even for me.

Nightrain Outro: Bucket

but I mean... He fucks up, but it fits in... I dunno, it sounds natural, and it doesn't really jump out of place... and he doesn't really fuck up bends, and november rain from finck was really far from clean... that shit hurts my ears.

Ron and Bucket are nearly always immaculate, Slash has been sloppy live plenty of times. Fortus is always solid, Finck is the least consistent live but is still an excellent player creatively.

but still, I am fucking biased, slash inspired me to play the guitar, so him being sloppy sounds immaculate :-)

Some players can afford to be sloppy. The likes of Page, Hendrix, Slash... They are pure, raw talent.

Sweet Child-Slash.  never liked those weird notes Robin hits...sounds like a mistake, and just sounds bad.

Mr. Brownstone-pretty close, but i think Robin pulled it of a bit better.  the part right before the 'we've been dancin' with Mr. Brownstone' part sounds real cool and everythin.

Nightrain-Fortus/BBF.  Ron fuckin tears it up.  and as a side comment, Axl sucked in the 2002 one...absolutuly horrible...

November Rain-Slash, i don't even need to listen to it.  Slash=owns everything (guitar wise) in that song.  Richard does a bang up job, though.

Chinese Democracy-never noticed there was a tempo increase.  neat.  uhmmm...probably Robin and Bucket.  the weird effects that Bucket had on always made the solo for me.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door-Ron.  not the best recording, you can hardly hear his guitar.

November Rain outro-once again, don't need to hear the comparison, this is Slash's #1 solo.

Nightrain outro-Buckethead, then Ron and then Slash.  Slash's sounded pretty bad, in my opinion.
