Worlds most generous social security
« on: January 05, 2007, 06:59:43 PM »
Ok, I will try something that even in my own language (swedish) is complicated to explain and that thing is to explain the swedish social security system. I have heard on several ocasions that the swedish social security is the most generous one in the whle world. Some other scandinavian countries come close, but anyway.

As you might know (or not) Sweden held elections to the national parliment last fall. The socialdemocrats with the ecological party and the former communist party lost the the majority in the parliment and therefore the primeminister posistion. The winners is the four right wing partys and they now holds the right to make decissons by their majority in  the parliment.

One of the issues debated before the election was the social security. It worked the way, that for a monthly cheap fee you recived 80% of your income if you happens to become unemployed. This way, people with cars and big loans on houses wouldn't have to move if they were to be unemployed. Does this kind of thing exist in other countries aswell?

Now with the right wing partys has agreed to cut, what we in sweden call "A-kassa" to lower the rate of percent you get if unemployed after 300 days to 65%. Also the fee to be able to participate in this system is rised alot.

Some say that this change is to lower the workes payment, if one turns desperate enoughe he would accept anything. I agree with that. What I am relly interested to know is how unemployed workers get by in other countries?

we have free health care and limited unemployment payments in canada.  i wouldn't want it any other way.  the less handouts you give people the harder they have to work, thats a good thing.  also, i'm sure you guys pay very high taxes for all this stuff.

In Norway we pay pretty high taxes, our state is swimming in oil money, along with enormous high sums paid by the people, still they find a way to make people pay extra money when they're building roads etc..

Anyway, we get what we call a ''free card'', so we don't have to pay for doctors and 'blue recept' meds, after we've used like..1000 kr or something, and it lasts the whole year. The card can be used at different places that payed by the state, or get a ''hjemmel'' as we call it.

If people are sick while working, more than like..two days, or something like that, over a long period at least...they have to have ''sykemelding'' wich is a paper from the doctor saying that you can't work because of a desease.

Um..yeah..does that cover it?

we got the same here.... exept for the meds. thingy! have to pay for em, but will get some % of the price the more you buy. I was lucky to only pay 1, 3rd of the amount i bought meds. for last year. (bought for 250.000... all epilepsy) But you will only get % on meds. on a "recept" from the doc.

Yeah, same here. Wow    I didn't know that your meds was THAT expensive, omg, that's like half of my moms paycheck or something! My meds are like...no where near that.

If we have meds on ''blue recept'' we get them completely free if we have a ''free card''..so let's say you buy like..meds for 1000 a certain year, you'll get the rest for free the same year, same with doctors, schrinks etc.

I think you should have that!

How do they expect poor people whos life depends on meds to survive?!

I guess it's a good cause paying as high taxes as we do..so poor people get a little support. Not saying that I'm happy with our system though!!!

Social Security is a joke in america.  It's going to run out by the time I'm in my 70's but I'll still have to pay it all my life anyways.... fuckers.
