28 weeks later

The sequel to 28 days later (one of my favourite films, as my avatar suggests) is finally coming out in May. It is starring Robert Carlysle and Michael from Lost (Harold Perrineu I think he is called).

So here comes the rise of the British film industry with superb recent films like Children of Men, Casino Royale, notes on a scandal etc. Do we think that British film's are any good? and can they challenge Hollywood which seems to be churning out the same old crap recently.

Personally i love British films.  just watched 28 days later again with some friends last night actually.

Children of Men is awesome, yeah, it wasn't exactly an entirely British effort though, we make some pretty great movies; The Last King of Scotland for example, and had some brilliant crossover indy/mainstream hits in the 90's eg Shallow Grave, A Life Less Ordinary etc.

I think worldwide cinema as a whole is going through a bit of a renaissance at the moment to challenge Hollywood (actually I think the real issue is that people are starting to realise that these countries have always made great movies and are finally able to see them rather than only American and British movies), Korean, German and Mexican cinema in particular right now are producing much better films than anything coming out of the big studios in America, plus Spain and France as well as China and Japan have always produced a lot of great movies, it's why half the films coming out of Hollywood right now are remakes of Japanese or Korean movies and in about 5 years time I'd expect to see similar numbers of remakes of Mexican films in the cinema

I dunno if British films are going to get the same success as American ones.

I only have to think of Forest Gump and The Green Mile to eliminate that idea. (the latter is my fav.)

I think British comedy rules over American comedies though.

We have made some classics:

Most of the Hitchcock films, the Bond films, the Italian Job, Pink Panther, Monty Python films.

The last good Hollywood film I saw was Superman begins and that in itself as pointed out by nemo is not particularly original.

I have always wanted to bunk off work for a summer and sit on a beach and write script and screenplay prequel to 28 days later ("28 Days Before" I would call it) from the outbreak at the Animal testing laboratory to the scene with Cilian Murphy waking up in the hospital. It would make a fucking awesome film and I have it written in my mind. It would be very violent and very political, following the general themes and parodies that underly both 28 days later and as I have read, 28 weeks later.

Before you guys get any ideas, I'm gonna do it this summer so back off.

that would be awsome!!  I cant believe this is actually gonna come out finally though. I seriously heard something about it when 28 days later was out. And now finally its almost here

Dawn Of The Dead was always the better zombie flick

^ Dawn of the dead was good. But 28 days later added a new dimension because the zombies could run fast rather than walk really slowly moaning and grunting.

That made it far more hardcore.

There is an animated DVD coming out on May 1st that explains what happened between 28 days and 28 weeks. It also will have a free ticket to the 28 weeks film.

The basic story is that the UK is now empty, all of the infected are dead and all of the evacuated refugees are allowed to return (Rose Byrne and Robert Carlysle) by the US who have clained victory over the Virus (analogies to what we see as terrorism perhaps). Unfortunately the virus is carried in by one zombie that is isolated for scientific purposes, and the virus is then released again by accident.

Apparently this film is more violent, dark and disturbing than the first. Danny Boyle (28 days director) didn't make this but was a senior executive something or other so his input will be seen throughout the film. The original 28 days cast will not feature as they are busy filming other things.

Bring it on.

You didn't see the DOTD remake from '03 or '04 or whatever?

Yeah I saw that and noticed they ripped it off.

I'm fairly sure 28 days later was the first to use running zombies that actually look like they could do you some harm rather than just being able to outwalk them.

without reading anything, i have doubts this will be a good movie. Just my simple pessimistic views on films.

then, i read:

- evacuated refugees: i sense a classic "human relation and feelings" story > very bad
- carried in by one zombie : O M G. this is going to be bad.
- dark, violent, disturbing: fast cut, lots of dark shots, less light, unclear, action, explosions > bad.

I will make own my mind up when it comes out. I hope this isnt just a sequel for the sake of a sequel.

The original film slipped into cinema's without much publicity and I hope this does the same. We all know how hype can damage future versions of past achievements.
