It's a nice stab at stoker's Dracula story. just get past the overly naive lead actor and its great. count orlok is great fun. lemme know what you think.

14 hour shift at work, next to nothing to do so i thought i'd score a few more off of my imdb top 250 list (from 96 at the beginning of the year im up to 186). So today i've watched,

The Killing - Two reasons make this a hugely enjoyable reason, but they're pretty specific to my enjoyment of a film; beyond that it was a really tight heist movie. Reason #1 - The main actor is a young version of the bent, irish cop who smacks michael corleone in the godfather. Y'know, the one who gets shot in the restaurant (it's not revenge, strictly business). Also, the scene in Terminator II where arnie walks in to the mall and he has the box of flowers with the shotgun (guns n' roses, were on the soundtrack. geddit?) is an homage to this. The exact same stunt is pulled in this and cameron is clearly giving kubrick a nod. For those two reasons its worth a watch.

Persona - I won't lie; it was hard to watch it and not be constantly wanting the two actresses to just get it on. I could talk about bergmann this and schoppenhauer that, but that's my honest review.

The Diving Bell and the butterfly - really enjoyable. it would've been easy to mess up.

managed to squeeze in grave of the fireflies before the end of my shift. could've been really very good. i appreciate its semi-autobiographical but i just thought the boy was a proud little shitebag - thats probably roughly intended but i couldnt take to him or it.

I just watched "American Movie" for the umpteenth time. It has to be the funniest documentary ever and I want my very own Mike Schank sidekick.

Mark Borchardt: Do you think this is a little bit cathartic for you?
Mike: Uh, very cathartic, Mark.
Mark Borchardt: Do you know what cathartic means?
Mike: No.

I just watched

Cowboys and Aliens   -  Was hoping cuzz Harrison Ford was in it.... that it would be better.  I mean that last Anchorman role film he did was genius (I would love a soundboard of his oneliners from that movie).   <<< Morning Glory   :smirk:   laughed my ass off.

   This film wasted 2 hours of my time starring into the New Mexico desert with stupidest storyline ever.

What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

Axl: I said I'm going on ChiDem now and he said whatever & walked away other than that I've been busy.

all about eve - classic ingenue tale made great by it being very true for bette davis who gets some cracking lines. also perked up by a young marilyn monroe who gets to sit in on a few scenes.

night of the hunter - didnt realise i'd actually read the book of this, but the actual story doesnt matter - psychotic preacher man marries widow, bumps her off tries to snaffle some cash. The important thing was the direction. For a film made in the 50s it was brilliant; like some 20's german expressionist picture mixed with the coens. Bonus points for the fact that i can now say i've seen a movie with Lillian Gish, that wasnt lillian gish.

roman holiday - having failed in my attempts to master a cary grant accent i'm not going to try and do a gregory peck accent. he's a pretty swell guy

district 9 - had it just been a south african guy saying "fokk" for two hours i'd be able to gve it pass marks but it was actually a brilliant movie.

on the waterfront - seems a bit paint by numbers nowadays but worth it just to see a young marlon brando.

A Separation. Certainly the best iranian film i've ever seen. In fact it's as good as just about anything i've seen. All the characters are fully thought out with foibles and virtues and motivations for their actions and the naturalistic action is as good as anything i've ever seen. Go buy it/download it. It's got my seal of approval.

Shame. really liked this. If you can get past the enormity of Fassbender's weapon of mass destruction (this one actually exists) you'll enjoy the film. Two people actually walked out midway through when i went to see it! thought it was great myself...

Haywire. Lame imo. Critics gave it good reviews - they're wrong.

The Beach - old yes, never seen before by me. Liked it - pretty decent.

just watch Chronicle... pretty good. Got a bit darker than expected. The american school scenes were a tad cliche' mind, but otherwise i found it pretty engrossing.
