Rolling Stone trashes GNR leaks, Again!
« on: May 21, 2007, 10:39:02 PM »
Just got the May 31 issue of Rolling Stone, Heres what it said under Download Now section:

             GUNS n' ROSES **(2 stars)
              "Chinese Democracy,"
               "There Was a Time"

New G N 'R? Well, No. But every few months, somebody leaks fresh remixes of the same old songs Axl Rose has been leaking for the past six or seven years: "Chinese Democracy," "The Blues," "There Was A Time", "I.R.S." and so on. They aren't getting any better, that's for sure. The latest "Chinese Democracy" remix still sounds like a Top Job cleanup of "You Could Be Mine," minus any guitar action (is this the Roy Thomas Baker production?) and is even duller than previous versions. And this might be the lamest "There Was A Time" yet, with circa 1998 trip-hop production and mushy attempt at a Daryl Hall-style falsetto. In other words, still no signs of life. Axl can keep mixing these songs, but if he's trying to turn them into rock & roll, he's got a few more years of work to do.                R.S.

Well judging leaks is not exactly being professional, considering that it's a fan who does the mixing. As Dizzy put it, none of the leaks originated by the band.

Rolling Stone last year says how good the leaks are and now they suck?  Okay.  Chinese Democracy is "even duller than previous versions", what previous versions is he talking about.  The old live bootlegs that everyone else agrees have been approved upon?

i totally see the point.  but i think theyre also growing tired of the shenaniganz.

on one hand, its not professional to critique a leak/demo.
then again, its the only thing they have to go by.

maybe if they would just release the damn ** ...

oh wait. thats right.

isnt that what every single topic here eventually dwindles down to?

the fun part is, that rolling stone was the one who had the article about "dark side of the moon remixed by trent reznor" in 1999. they were the one who opened the wait for CD with their comments on how great the demos sounded in 1999.

Rolling Stone have been relevant in decades. Every good album that has come out in the past 20 years they have trashed.

The funny thing is they'll probably be sucking GnR off when the album is released.  These little blurbs are stupid because they contradict previous RS articles.  Like when they said that IRS and Better were 'better' than anything VR had done last year.  Then this year they had a new, better version of IRS and they trashed it.  Saying CD is duller than previous versions when there haven't been any previous versions leaked, although this newest version of CD is clearly better than the 2001-2002 version.  Saying TWAT has trip hop production when the new one doesn't have that at all, the old one had trip hop production, the new one has actual orchestration.  If they're going to talk bad about these leaks they could at least make sense and be consistent

Maybe it's just a different person writing the review. People have different tastes, and this one may have also been fueled by the frustration we are all feeling. Not to mention that they aren't that far off in their description of what the song sounds like.

usually I would think the editor would do some better fact checking and also realize that related articles have been written by other writers.  There is misleading info all over this and its basically rating there was a time again, cuz the new one wasnt that different, why wouldnt he pick the blues?  Cuz he knows its awesome but hates axl?  Who knows, Rolling Stone sucks now anyway, I dont know if its because im older and not into pop culture, or the new pop culture just plain sucks.

Not to mention that they aren't that far off in their description of what the song sounds like.

I'm not sure he even knows what songs he's reviewing.  He refers to the "latest" Chinese Democracy remix, when it's the only studio version that's ever been available

Then he refers to TWAT's "trip hop" production which would be a much more relevant comment referring to the old version.

I'm not sure that he even knows what versions of what song he's reviewing.  And why would they review TWAT again but ignore the superior version of IRS that was leaked around the same time, as well as Madagascar and The Blues?
