the thing i dont get is
every one bashes velvet revolver
when really they are pretty good
its just that they aint gnr
and i suppose as the new linup wont have what the old linup had (the volitile mix)
vr wont have the same chemistry because its 2 dif guys in the linup and it will work differently because they are different people
then axl's statement about slash visiting his house and askin to rejoin can't of helped anything in vr
and i do genuinely like both contraband and libertad
but for anyone who thinks slash holds back on all songs
check out the song no more, no more.
he plays like a crazy S.O.B
in fact the only 2 things vr have done i disslike are
the acoustic fall to peices because scott can't form words
and spay
All cautions made, every chance was given, no effort spared, to save what we had*
or it would take, away the light we given, once it is ours, were free from this land

It's not just that Velvet Revolver are not great, it's that in being only mediocre they act SO PHONY eg. the rip-off greets and meets and stuff says a lot about how loftily they see themselves. Scott has no semblance of star quality but seems to think otherwise... it's painful to watch. And the ex-gunner aura can only sustain them for so long. If they actually made a great album they could go ahead and act like stars, but they didn't.

My theory on VR is that it's a clever concept but poorly executed, it goes like this: obvious heavy reliance on the ex-gunner factor, yes, but it meant they couldn't have a singer who might upstage them, so they went for a generic rock n roll wannabe wanker who imitates past heroes like Bowie etc.  It's easy then particularly for younger fans awestruck by the ex-gunners -- their target market, smart move, all very calculated -- to imagine themselves in the generic singer role singing along with the legend ex-gunners. That's the sort of trip it is, like ex-gunner karaoke. And it's the complete antithesis of having a unique and striking singer as in GNR up front taking them in new directions, instead it's a 180 degree turn where they blend into and draw from a generic rock past. It's clever in that they don't have to live up to anything new, don't have to be innovative or try to compete with GNR (it also means that Weiland is easily replaceable.. there's hope). It's like they said fuck it, we'll just take it easy and get by as much as possible on our past, and on curious new GNR fans, with as little effort as possible, why bust our asses... a philosophy I can really empathize with....but they forgot not to be mediocre. If only they were actually more inspired and wrote some top songs....

I think alot of us bash Velvet Revolver but we still love them in a way it's one of those things that like only GNR fans can do yet if some fool started running his mouth about them we'd be one of the first ones to defend VR. It's abit elitist and sad but by looking at other fan sites you can defintely see it happens one minute guys are dealing out the shit but next when some noob comes on about linkin park or something dissing VR then peeps sorta rally together and some still manage to get sly digs at VR in.

I know if VR split up before making one more album then i'd be kinda sad.

Well their lead singer is from a fairly successful band that made several platinum albums (I dunno if they got a Grammy, but GNR did not in either case). So I do not see why people dislike the band because of the singer. And yeah, it is not GNR, but if I want GNR I go listen to GNR. The band has a pretty good rock style that takes some complex guitar work from GNR and puts it into some grunge songs. Which ain't bad, considering that most new music today is concentrated on emo.

I have taken digs at Slash and Duff in the past because, you know, how dare they form a band that everything about it starting with the name seems like a reaction to GNR, that feeds off of their association to GNR, and what's more whine to the press and twist things around about GNR. Though in more recent times I've kinda come to see more humour in the  dastardliness of all that and the refusing to be quietly dignified about the past, as sorta, well, rock n roll, like when Duff makes a snide remark that he wishes GNR wouldn't use the name, etc -- they sold it! and he knows he's causing confusion!  (they just never imagined it would live on in the way it will now, without them) -- because what is so dignified about debauched rock n roll? It must have been a running joke in the band, especially in the light of the supposed 'epicness' and 'importance' of Axl's long-looming CD... They won't have the last laugh now, though.  But honestly I'd like to see them move on now and do well, make some damn good music they're passionate about.

How is that different from what Axl is doing? Slash, Duff, and Matt are just as essential to the old GNR as Axl is. I don't really care about what name the band uses (when I listen to their music, I listen to the music they made, not read the name over and over). I am happy that there is a band named Guns N' Roses touring, but I never counted on Velvet Revolver being a spin-off from GNR. They are a completely different entity.
