Was Brain's drumming toned down?
« on: December 01, 2007, 04:33:14 PM »
I listen to Las Vegas 2001 concert a lot in my car stereo system especially to November Rain.  Brain's drumming was raw and loud (maybe something to do with live audience recording).  Axl even mentioned at the end of the song, "That was some badass shit Brain on the drums.." The 2000 MTV performance was also awesome where is Brain is concerned. But then on subsequent concerts that I've listened to, his drumming was seemed to have been toned and not as loud.  RockAm Ring 2006 is a good example.  So, was Brain's drumming toned down?

its hard to tell from the rock am ring show because the music was all mucky and stuff, so it seemed like the entire band was toned down. RAR was a bad example man....

I was just blown away with they way Brain added to the overall sound of classic GNRs.  He added a lot of crunch and punch to them at least that's how I hear it in the Vegas show in 2001.

drumming on afd is pretty basic man... and seeing how the setlist is mostly AFD material anyway, im guessing it took him less than 2 months from joining GnR to learn the whole setlist. I mean, c'mon, it's not like they've changed it much. he could probably do it with his eyes closed. Though, after 7 years, so could everyone else.....

Oh right maybe i should follow your example and be at least the one millionth person named MrBrownstone*insert random number here* on a GNR forum and tell people who acknowledge that Brain and Josh Freese were literally too talented to be confined to playing the same songs for 5+ years they should leave and then i'll feel like i belong here.  :rolleyes:

While I totally agree, Sorum did play on UYI 1 + 2, and Adler play on AFD.

They aren't exactly terrible drummers.

on RAR, and the other concerts even the ones with Frank,
theirs this drum sound i believe on either Ryiad (brain) or on KOHD,
it sounds like hes playin so hard that the drumsticks are hitting like a book.
heres what i mean::

right when the drums start. Like 0:55.
I dont know how that sound is done, but its soo mean.
Blast it louder n you can hear it better.

Thomas Lang is a hack of a drummer, while his excercises are fantastic and he has great technical knowledge. His actual band playing and performances are diabolical. His a good clinician, but not a good musician in a band.

That said, Freese is an awesome drummer.

I was never a fan of Brain's work in GnR personally, I love Primus and his work in that band. But in gnr something seemed amiss, i'm glad Frank's in the band now.
