A question to all you singers who sing gnr.
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:28:52 PM »
I have been singing for a year and a half now, and I notice that it seems harder to sing the new gnr songs, than it is the older ones.  Do any of you other singer notice the same thing???? I dont know if its just me, or the new songs are acutally harder to sing.

Yeah, theres definately a difference. He seems now to start high, and go higher. And it seems less violent if you know what I mean. Like back in the early 90's when he sounded like his throat was gonna explode (I loved that by the way) just the evilution of his voice I guess. But the new stuff is harder to hit.

Im not a singer but I think it has to do with the new stuff more focused around hitting certain notes where as alot of the old stuff could just be screamed and it would sound at least half decent

Try "Just Screaming" out KOHD or WTJ or Paradise City, you'll blow your vocal chords out (if you can come close) Axl had the unique sound of some one who sound so fuckin' pissed off (Like YCBM), or passionate, (like in the chorus of KOHD preformed live) but be in key, thats rare, so rare, I've never heard anybody come close, i don't care what anybody says, if someone else could do it, they'd be on a stage. Try it, and let me know how that turns out for ya...

Axl relies more on singing through his throat nowadays assisted by a fuck load of voice synth and vocal reverb thats how he's hitting the notes.
Back in the day and especially starting out he had to sing more from his lungs to get the sound out due to minimal "vocal help" that he now gets from the in ear monitors and voice synths he uses. Hence the difference in his voice from the 80's 90 and today.

I've been performing the new numbers with Guns 2 Roses for about 2 years now and it did take some getting used to. Some people can get up there but it all depends on how deep or high your natural talking and singing voice is.
Try not to do yourself any damage.  ;)

I agree his old style is tough on the chords, but he's starting out alot higher than he used to, and then inturn, he continues to go even higher. Like in "Message For You" or Song #2, whatever, he starts out pretty high for such a soft beginning to the song, and then flys up when he gets to "I saw the damage in you" then goes higher at "What would you say if I" and then and then the ridiculously high "fortune and fam" part. It's just all a different octave. I love it though. It's his evelution I guess.

Does it show?

And also, I've noticed that too. I can't believe he sounds the same at the beginning...and when you hear interviews sometimes his voice is deep! Like baritone deep.

Evolution. Axl has been through that street.

there's more of a forced rasp that's in the back of the throat in the newer songs.

When i sing i just have managed to nearly master that same risp and hard rockin' voice of Axl's once you have mastered it and you can do a good handfull of gigs doing old material then and only then may you have a chance of signing the new stuff, its all about if you have the voice or not!!, Risp is the word, and you cant try and fake it you have to have that sound,
I am so epic, i need no signature!

The Blues is just fuckin pipe-blowing man

indeed it is! it can be tough for somebody and definitely ruin their chords. i can imagine many people get the click in 3:25'ish part of the song where he is going "aaaah aaah aah"
and also, that outro part starting with "what i thought was beautiful was only memories oh oooh oh " it took a while for me to get that very last part to hit right. very easy to click and lose your breath singing street of dreams.

I have been singing for a year and a half now, and I notice that it seems harder to sing the new gnr songs, than it is the older ones.  Do any of you other singer notice the same thing???? I dont know if its just me, or the new songs are acutally harder to sing.

do you have any samples of you singing old and new? if you wanna try to expand your breath threshold, try singing while running. it may not sound very pretty but you eventually learn to manage your flow. also, try expanding your belly and getting full breaths when belting the words out. also, dictation could be playing a role. try rounding your mouth out a little more. in addition, drink lots of room temp water, make sure you're breathing steady when working out (and singing), keep a nutritious diet, and keep practicing!
dunno if this will help but try singing on an empty stomach, see if you can hit some real high notes.
I'm sorry for you, not sorry for me!
