Some Friendly Advice for Axl Rose (AZ Republic Article)
« on: January 23, 2009, 04:33:55 PM »
Found this on a local newspaper/website.

http://www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/2009/01/23/20090123axlroserehabhotlist.html

Dear Axl,

OK, yes, I may have made some jokes at your expense with regard to this "putting in 17 years on one album and watching it tank" phenomenon that is Chinese Democracy. But dude, I only did it out of love.

For Guns N' Roses.

Or what Guns N' Roses meant in 1987, on that no-time-in-the-making masterpiece that made us feel so welcome in your jungle.

Have you heard it lately?

It's your best work.

But you could do more great work if you just tried a little less.

It's easy, really.

You can turn this sinking ship around.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Lose the cornrows. Seriously, dude. It's not the right look, and it may be cutting off the blood flow to your brain.

2. Knock off the Howard Hughes "I haven't left my house in 15 years" routine. It's not the kind of crazy people want from you.

3. Get on the road and find yourself. Onstage. You'll reconnect with what it was that made you special in the first place. Who knows? Maybe you'll be so good, fans will rush right out and buy Chinese Democracy. But you should do Step 1 first. Really. Lose the cornrows.

4. Go back and listen to Appetite. A lot. If you can get back in that headspace, you can beat this thing.

5. Figure out what records you were really into back in 1987. Dig those out, and figure out what made you tick when you were brilliant.

6. Type this out and stick it somewhere you'll be forced to read it every day: "Not everybody gets to make their Sgt. Pepper." Come to terms with that and you'll be fine.

7. Accept the fact that ambition had nothing to do with why we liked you in the first place.

8. Have another album out within the year. And then another album out within a year of that. It doesn't matter if they're not perfect. Imperfection is its own reward in rock and roll (less so in piloting).

9. Put a little band together, two guitars at most, and use that band on every track. You'd be surprised what that does for bringing the word "cohesive" back to your reviews.

10. If all else fails, go audition for Velvet Revolver. Something tells me you'd sound great with those guys, especially Slash. But don't let them join Guns N' Roses. Think of how much lower people's expectations are when an album says Velvet Revolver. And there's no chance you'll make the greatest Guns N' Roses album ever, but Velvet Revolver's best album? It's totally doable.

Wow what a crock is right.

1.  I love AXL with or without corn rows....
2.  VR's Contraband and Libertad cannot EVER hold a candle to CHIN DEM. or any other GnR albums for that matter.
3.  The recluse thing...screams out SEXY...
4.  Appetite has it's place in rock and roll history as it should.  Continue doing what you're doing AXL...It's genious!!!!
5.  "Cohesive" and dysfunctional are 2 different things.  The new GnR performance on stage is
nothing but cohesive and quite far from dysfunctional.  Old line-up, dysfunctional and passe'.

I agree fully with #8, I don't want to have to wait another 14 years for 1 album from the band that I love. If there really is enough material for 2 or 3 albums, then for fuck's sake please get that shit released sometime in the next few years. Reasonably soon is okay with me

I agree somewhat with #9, as far as being a solid band is concerned. There can be no doubting that GNR has had quite the revolving cast of players. Sometimes it seems like GNR is more of a BRAND than a band, at least it seemed that way for a while. Hopefully now we do have a stable group of musicians in it for long haul. Although it does look like we need someone (again) to replace Robin...

Bucket hasn't been in the band since 2004 I believe? Yet he's featured throughout the majority of CD. Going through the booklet for CD now, I see 10 songs with at least 4 guitarists. That seems like a lot, even if each guitarist is only playing little bits and pieces here and there.

And as far as #10 goes... Well... All I'm gonna say is Chinese kicks Contraband's and Libertab's fucking ass

(But Axl did sound GREAT with Slash and Duff.. didn't he? :D)
