The Red Dwarf crew will be returning to Earth when the cult sci-fi show returns to TV later this year.

Red Dwarf: Return To Earth will reportedly see last human Dave Lister (Craig Charles) achieve his life-long goal of touching down on his home planet.

The two-part special, which has been commissioned by digital channel Dave, will reunite original cast members Charles, Danny John-Jules, Chris Barrie and Robert Llewellyn one decade after the iconic comedy ended.

Speaking to The Sun, Barrie confirmed the plot, saying: "Yes, Lister's dream is about to come true. But like everything in Red Dwarf, nothing is straightforward."

Written and directed by Red Dwarf creator Doug Naylor, the special episodes will kick off a special Easter weekend of Red Dwarf on Dave.

Return To Earth will be followed by Red Dwarf: Unplugged, which has been described as a "no holds barred" episode with no sets, no effects and no autocue. The weekend will close with Red Dwarf: The Making Of Back To Earth, which will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the new production.

The programme ran from 1988 until 1999, winning numerous awards including an international Emmy. It has sold more than seven million DVDs and videos across the world and at its peak, pulled in eight million viewers

I hope to god they dont have the same shit as they did in the last series, it needs a send off on par with seasons 3-4-5 in terms of humour.

i enjoyed it but i think the thing that will ruin it for most people is its shot like a movie, not like a sitcom. theres no live audience or laughter track, the production values are HUGE. the sets aren't crappy dingy lit sets anymore, they're all top notch brand new sets and theres tons of CG. The Scutters are now CG, the large sets are now CG. production wise, its spectacular. Writing wise, not as funny as the older stuff. i mean within the first 5-10 minutes theres already a sad moment when its revealed that someone has died (i won't reveal who). This is Doug's "Red Dwarf: The Movie" downsized and brought to TV. its as simple as that. although the new hologram is freakin hot.

Although i may add, even though this is dougs, it is revealed to be a Rob Grant/Doug Naylor production. the first since Series 6.

it wasn't very funny. actually, it wasnt funny. With the exception of Big Suz from peep show in a sexy little number it was pretty dire.

Uh i like the audiences laughter...its helps.

I hate it when they bring a programme back and they always change it,just try and keep it the same ffs =( oh well theres always the old ones.

wasn't as bad as last night, still not particuarly funny tho. it'll be interesting to see how they pull it together with just half an hour to go.

Perhaps one the reasons it hasnt set the heather alight is that the episodes are shorter as they're not on the Beeb anymore, and the first thing to get lost when tightening up a show are the gags.

mmk. thats it? thats the ending? i would've prefered Lister to stay in that reality so it would've been a proper ending. that was such an anticlimax. that was a terrible ending, i'm sorry. at least if Lister died, there couldn't be anymore cos it was originally about Lister's survival and ths is Lister's death but nooo. dammit, it should've ended at the clouds. then cut to credits.

dont know why, but i quite enjoyed the last episode. it would've been too cheap to kill of lister in a dave 3 part easter special, y'know?

i'd be surprised if they dont do more episodes off the back off this tbh and hopefully they'll do something worthwhile. and a bit funnier.

maybe a good thing really, plus with how crap the 3 episodes turned out to bei dont think they will be making any more
