Shure SM57
Shure SM58

If you buy anything else then you're probably quite dumb.

SM57 are easily best value for money. I use them for guitars and snare drum.
Not sure about an SM58 for the studio though Nemo, I like AKG mics for studio vocals. For gigs it's SM58 all the way though.

SM57. Will sound good on everything... except vocals.
I'd go Nady/T Bone ribbon mic's for vocals/acoustic guitar. Cheap as chips but they sound good.

Alternatively, if you can find one, an MCA SP1 condenser mic. They sell for $40 but sound great.

Tell that to Ronnie Van Zandt   or uh... someday in guitar heaven
What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

It's not some kind of secret satellite wireless telecommunications to require a licence man. it's just a simple microphone but without Wire!

already said. sm57 is the most widely used and for its price. or if its strictly studio you can find a condenser mic but would require more dead silence in your surroundings

NT1 Rhodes condenser mic - that's THE studio vocal mic. emphasis on STUDIO.

Live, as stated, a standard Shure SM58... i personally dont like 58's though...

Not sure how much the Rhodes would cost - but if its recording you're looking at, and specifically vocals, you gotta go for a condenser (well, you dont HAVE to, but they are better for vocal as a general rule...)

Rhode NT1 or NT2
and DONT BUY A SHURE SM 57 or 58 for recording
its the difference between a demo a decent track
those shure mics are live mics and don't have a tailored frequency response.

Mooney is right on the money
but you need batteries or a desk with phantom power to run a condenser mic

oh yea, that last part is important. you never specified which kinda recording you were looking at - if it was studio time, they'd have condensers mics as standard, obv a desk and of course phantom power.

But as I ARE ESS says, its its more a home recording, demo kinda thing in which you wanna record vocals and instruments, then an SM58 shudnt set you back too much...

i learned this in college but have also experienced it in practice too.
when my band are recording just demo ideas sean oursinger uses a 57 and we d.i the guitar and we get just demoish sounding tunes,
whenn  we use a proper studio sean uses a rhode nt2
and all the guitars are mic'd up properly with microphones with a tailored frequency response and it makes all the difference.
check out www.myspace.com/lifelinerock our emo punk may not be your thing but you can hear the difference between the demo tracks (Orca, Ashes, Good Secret) and the final tracks (censored networks, heartburn, Atom Bomb) as we have a mix of both up at the moment and the difference proper mics can make is apparent

That's my choice:

Sennheiser Evolution 865S

Isn't this the one Sting from The Police is using; because I almost feel like this being so!
