Anyone read the comics? Anyone excited about the movie? I'll be honest I never heard of em until last year but the plot sounds good and I am excited!

It is a movie based on a short comic book series that was relesed in late 80's It is supposed to be really great (I never read it) but the trailer looks SWEET!!!!!!

'sigh' you people

comparing Watchmen to fantastic four is like comparing the Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter

clueless, all of you

..Anyway, I hope the movies good, but the GN is just so complex that I'm not sure they can pull it off properly

Watchmen, while maybe a little over-rated by the Alan Moore fan-boys who seem to think he's the only comic book author ever to offer up real social commentary, is one of the best books (and I do mean books across all genres, not just comic books) of the 20th Century.  I just hope the film can do it justice (and still don't understand why they ditched the screenplay David Hayter wrote for it years ago)

But if they get it right it could quite comfortably be the best superhero and best action movie of all time.

Damn you, I wanted to make this thread :tear:

I'm VERY excited about this film, though I do feel Zack Synder's overuse of slow-mo and some weak acting may keep it from greatness.

I would advise most people to read the graphic novel before seeing it though. The trailers are no indication of what kind of work this is. Most of my friends are really looking forward to it, but they really have no idea what they're in for

Didn't Terry Gilliam say that to do his screenplay properly the film would need to be 5 hours long.
I'm going in with an open mind, I'm a huge fan of the GN and can't wait to see how it turns out but am anxious about the new ending and the absence of 'Tales of the Black Freighter' I'm glad it's an 18 though, my worst fear was that they would pander to the teenage Batman crowd.

yeah, he called it unfilmable and said that the best way to do the novel justice would have been over the space of a 5hr miniseries

I'd love to have seen his version. Or Paul Greengrass'.

Perhaps splitting it into 2 films, shot back to back, released a year apart a la Lord of the Rings would have been the right way to do it.  As things are the film is close to 3 hours and like you said omits Freighter entirely (it's gonna be a dvd extra i believe) and cuts out a lot of the detail of the novel.  It's an epic work of fiction and there's not a lot of fat to be trimmed off it without weakening the story somewhat so I don't see why they couldn't have split it over multiple movies rather than doing what they inevitably will and making a sequel with an 'original story by Joe Schmo'.  It'd have been easy to create a multi-movie franchise out of Watchmen without the need for extraneous material.

The whores and politicians will look up and shout "save us" and I'll whisper...no.

It's so weird seeing all of my favorite comics be made into movies by talented filmmakers and the nerd shit I got from my friends and peers is now socially accepted into the mainstream. Oh well. Fuck them.

Anyway Watchmen was the first comic I ever "loved". I read the traditional kiddie ones when I was younger but my family friend and later main homie Dave opened/owned a comic shop in our tiny little shanty town and eventually snuck me a copy of Watchmen. I was like a little kid experiencing the real world for the first time. I'm beyond psyched to see this flick.

The theatrical cut is shorter than the "good versions" but whatever, I'll be patient. Same thing with Sin City, got the longer cut on DVD. Word on the street is that the Director's Cut is 3 hours, 10 minutes and the full cut is 3 hours and 25 minutes with Black Freighter and all the other good bits thrown back in. I hope it's long enough, I was hoping for a near 4 hour like the extended ROTK DVD, but I think they could cut out a little bit of the redundant stuff from the 'books.

I think I might be lucky enough to attend the premier, so if that pans out I'll be beyond psyched.

It's nothing like that POS movie. It's not kiddy either.
There's mention of prostitution and child pornography in seedy underground bars, scenes with rape and intense violence
It's a dark neo-noir set in an alternate 1980s. Awesome stuff, not for kids, and asks some pretty interesting questions.

P.S.

I just hope the film can do it justice (and still don't understand why they ditched the screenplay David Hayter wrote for it years ago). But if they get it right it could quite comfortably be the best superhero and best action movie of all time.

Same here man, same here. I'll be crushed if it's rubbish. I heard Hayter's script was incredible and if Aranofsky had stayed on the project, then wow. Could have been so incredible.

But they look on track to make something great. Here's hoping.

The movie is 3 hours because of all the unneccesary slo mo in it.

No it's not.

It's because it's an adaptation of a 350-or-so page book and the result of the difficulty of trying to balance heavy exposition vs. entertainment & faithfulness to the books and maintaining artistic integrity vs. making something that appeals to a broad audience and make money.

Don't talk out yer ass.
