RIO DE JANEIRO  —  A 9-year-old girl who was carrying twins, allegedly after being raped by her stepfather, underwent an abortion Wednesday despite complaints from Brazil's Roman Catholic church.

Police said the stepfather has been jailed since last week.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil, but judges can make exceptions if the mother's life is in danger or the fetus has no chance of survival.

Fatima Maia, director of the public university hospital where the abortion was performed, said the 15-week-old pregnancy posed a serious risk to the 80-pound (36-kilogram) girl.

"She is very small. Her uterus doesn't have the ability to hold one, let alone two children," Maia told the Jornal do Brasil newspaper.

But Marcio Miranda, a lawyer for the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in northeastern Brazil, said the girl should have carried the twins to term and had a Caesarean section.

"It's the law of God: Do not kill. We consider this murder," Miranda said in comments reported by O Globo.

Calls to Miranda were not immediately returned.

Brazil is home to more Catholics than any other nation.

Doctors withstood pressure from the Roman Catholic church, which tried to prevent the abortion. Marcio Miranda, lawyer of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in northeastern Brazil, threatened to sue the girl's mother.

"We regard this as murder. It is God's law - thou shalt not kill," he said.

The stepfather, 23, confessed to the rape and was arrested in Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco. According to police, the girl had been sexually abused since she was 6.

Her pregnancy first came to light after she complained of dizziness and said she often felt sick, Brazilian news agency Folha Online reported. The subsequent medical examination revealed last week that she was pregnant with twins.

It happened in my city, where I live. I'm catholic but in this case I didn't agree with the church. In my opinion the little girl's life had to be preserved, and she's still a child, only 9 years old. It is a matter of life and death. So I think the doctors act correctly.

Even if she could have the baby physically with no problem, I'm for the abortion too. Its incest and she is 9 and on top of that she was raped.  For all these reasons or any of them, she shouldn't be forced to live with this trama.

The bible says do not kill, and that is the catholic church's ground for their argument.But the bible also says" 'Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sexual relations with either her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness."

never mind that rape is an unwanted sexual act, if by Catholic logic Abortion is Murder in a loose tie to the 10 commandments Then surely that biblical quote shows that Sexual relations with a woman and her daughter is wickedness and should never happen, therefore surely those Children should never of happened??

Also interestingly i'm pretty sure the bible does not mention abortion once (correct me if i'm wrong) so therefore there is no religious law on it other than interpretation.

Apparently the church has now excommunicated the doctors, nurses, girl's mother, etc, etc for helping her.

I do so love their compassion.  Perhaps they could tell her she's going to Hell and chuck out the psychologists trying to convince her this isn't all her fault just to make sure she gets the message...
