GUNS N' ROSES' new album, "Chinese Democracy" — which was released on November 23, 2008 as a Best Buy exclusive after a wait of more than 15 years — will officially fall out of The Billboard 200 next week after selling 2,500 copies in the United States in the seven days ending March 15.

Aside from Billboard and Spinner interviews and answering a number of fan questions at a GUNS N' ROSES message board, singer Axl Rose has done no promotion of any kind for "Chinese Democracy".

"Chinese Democracy" was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on February 3, 2009 for shipments in the United States in excess of one million copies. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the CD has sold 565,000 copies in the U.S. so far.

According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, GUNS N' ROSES is rumored to be planning a co-headlining tour with VAN HALEN.

RollingStone.com reported earlier this month that Axl Rose intends to take the current lineup of GUNS N' ROSES out on a worldwide stadium tour this summer. "Axl has been basically quiet, keeping out of the limelight for almost 15 years," GUNS manager Irving Azoff told RollingStone.com. "People think they know him, but they really only know what has been said about him by questionable people. He is a good guy and often misunderstood — he is a professional who has worked very hard to build and maintain a high creative standard for GUNS N' ROSES, which I support. We have some exciting things in the works this year for GN'R. I'm looking forward to it."

Contrary to a report posted on the MTV Spain web site, the band has absolutely no plans of playing Spain's Kobetasonik festival this June, according to RollingStone.com.

Doesn't this section contradict itself?

I'm confused, it's been awarded platinum status, yet soundscan says it's only 500,000

Can they sell outside of Best Buy yet?  I remember everyone saying that once they got out of that deal CD would shoot right up the charts again.. wondering if that part of CD starts now or..

500,000 isn't bad. I'd like to sell 500,000 copies of my music.

  • Every act has a universal dimension
I really doubt that anybody who really wanted to buy this album would have waited till the BB exclusive expires. It's more than 4 months now... Wich fan would have been able to wait so much time to buy the most awaited album of all times ?

ChiDem started in november, it's over now.

The sales historic speak for itself, 1 million of die hard fans bought this album the first 2 weeks. Anybody else just didn't care about it.

And there was no lack of promotion IMHO. This album is the one and only album in music history that didn't need promotion at all as it already had a 14 years long promotion.
Most awaited, most anticipated album of all times. Promotion wouldn't have changed anything, everybody knows it's out.

Of course. But just saying.. I'd be happy with selling those numbers for sure  :shy:
If my name was Axl Rose and my band "Guns N Roses" I'd have wanted to sell a few more copies. At least I would have thought it would on its own you know?

Do you guys think they've turned a profit on this thing yet? I mean, even counting the previous 2 tours that supported Chinese Democracy. You guys think the record companies can sit back and relax?

You guys think maybe the record companies are letting this one tank? Seems weird that they had the most built up album ever and really didn't get behind it. With the type of music presented it could have passed as more pop'ish. I can imagine it would be ridiculously hard to promote the album without the band though..

Rock and a hard place right there.
