What Riff Did It For You?
« on: March 27, 2009, 09:08:21 AM »
I always heard guitars and said "that shit sounds hot" but never ever did I say "I have to learn how to do that shit" till I heard fucking Locomotive. At like 7:04 in Slash does this 'chika chika wow' shit that just sets this pace in me man. Don't know how to explain it..

Then its like 'chika chika chika'... 'chika chika chika'.. 'chika chika woooow'...

Then just gets nastier and nastier. Pure Slash goodness for those people who know what I'm talking about.

So.. what riff made you say "yep.. fucking guitar'.

Can any of you play that Locomotive outro? I'm nowhere near it though I honestly haven't seriously practiced it.

the solo that MADE me become a guitar player was the end solo in November Rain, but I still can't play it.

The solo in Coma made that impression on me, as did Don't Cry, both of those were mastered easliy.

It's So Easy solo. I know it's easy but its just so raw to me.

Slash's November Rain and Estranged solos more than anything. but right now, my biggest influence and inspiration is David Gilmour.

Extreme - Rest In Peace

The intro riff is just so rockin.  Not to mention the awesome verse chords and funky-ass chorus.  The solo rips too.  Also when I first heard The He-Man Woman Hater intro(flight of the wounded bumblebee,)  I couldn't believe that was a human playing a guitar.  All in all, Nuno Bettencourt is my biggest inspiration.  Also, Jerry Cantrell is a big one too.  The solo in Them Bones, rippin.

I remember watching a repeat of Queen's live aid performance one morning when I was a wee nipper. It blew my socks off and forever afterwards, I always had boners for electric guitars and specifically electric guitar solos.

Something weird happened to me that morning. It felt like I didn't get into guitars, guitars got into me.

I didn't really have the means to buy and learn guitar though and I was just a stupid kid. I didn't even think I could do it. I just couldn't wrap my head around the idea. Still, it stayed with me.

Then, later on, when I was about 12/13, a friend of mine started to learn how to play guitar. We were in the music room at school and he played the SCOM riff. Badly.

I came.

Now, several years later, I'm a total guitar nerd who's iPod is filled to the brim with endless guitar wank of all types and flavours and who's entire income is spent on guitar gear to play guitar wank and high end audio gear to listen to music.

Being a tech nerd and a guitar nerd is a potent and very expensive mixture.

It's an illness, it really is :p

Somewhere about halfway through led zep III i finally cracked. Id put off learning to play for years as i couldnt be arsed being shit. Playing gn'r always seemed an absolute world away from where i'd start off at, but the acoustic sound of LZ III was a bit more accessable. I still prefer playing acoustic.

I'll have to say Rocket Queen, it was so amazingly bad ass and if only I could play that my life would be completed, funnily enough it took forever to make my dad buy strings for our guitar, as he hadn't played since forever so by the time I took it into my own hands and bought some I was determined to master Stairway to Heaven..
