some amp recommendations from you clever bunch...
« on: May 15, 2009, 08:44:33 PM »
decent amp, hard rock sound (im thinking UYI here) not too expensive, ie, bedroom/practise/possible recording use, anymore than 300 quid is a struggle.

mr purplehaze, nemo, i looking at you guys! ;)

Do want more effects than power or the other way around?

You don't want effects or power.  for bedroom and recording use you want like a 5 watt tube amp with great natural tone.  My practice amp is a Fender Champion 600, it's dinky and the only thing on it's a master volume dial but it sounds wonderful (maybe won't dirty up enough for you though, the tone is still fairly clean when cranked, I'm considering doing a Dave Davies and attacking the speaker with a pencil...).

There's no point in buying an 80 watt solid state amp for £300 unless you're planning on playing an arena but want really shitty guitar tone.  Similarly amps with in built effects just kinda suck, buy the champion like I have (not necessarily trying to push it, but just as an example) and from your budget you'll have about £180 left to buy a really shit hot overdrive pedal and another decent pedal (*delay* cough, cough) to give you more options.  Alternatively you could use the spare cash to buy something a bit freak-outy like a Zvex Fuzz Factory or a MXR Blue Box (glitchy octave fuzz pedal, lets you play sub-bass frequencies on a standard guitar).

line 6 is great if you're looking "everything in one package" kinda amp... it's not brilliant in anything but it does pretty good for putting everything in one box. So I'd say line 6 makes ideal practise amps eventhough 99% of you will disagree.

marshall dsl400 is also awesome practise amp and you can definetly get those UYI tones out of it at least if you get a overdrive and equalizer.

if by power u mean gain (volume) then id say effects seeing as at best the thing would only need to be louder than drums.

nemo is on the right lines with the champion + an OD pedal to get that sound im looking for, though a combo would also be preferable...

i'll check out the champion though, and the marshall dsl400. anything else i should look into?

I'm guessing your after a GNR type tone?

You could keep in an eye open for a second hand Marshall JTM30.  That should be around £300-£400 depending on condition... sounds decent at low volumes and can also easily handle most pub gigs where you will be able to achieve some nice power amp valve break-up without destroying your hearing!

Dude, a 40watt valve amp is not a practice amp unless you practice in Madison Square Garden.

DSL overdriven tone is nice though, much better than the TSL.  if they did a 10 watt version of it or something then it'd probably be perfect.

And yeah, I'd be one of the people naysaying the Line 6 idea, although I guess if having more tonal options available is more important to you than the all out quality of the tone then maybe it would be a better option.

any opinions on the Vox VT15 15W combo?

a lot cheaper than my budget at 155ish, which is always nice, good size, anyone here give any feedback on this amp? (excuse the pun, not intentional)

I have a Roland Cube 30, think it cost me about £160 four years ago and it's the only amp I've had aside from a 15 watt marshall which was infinitely inferior. It has some basic effects such as Reverb / Delay, Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Tremolo and you can set the amount of each of them just as you would adjust the volume. It has a lush clean tone as I mainly practice and write with a clean tone but it has a fairly meaty, cutting sounding distortion which I love.

Actually, it may not have been £160, that mat have just been the Cube 60 I was looking at. Can't remember

well I can play with 40-50w amps at my home and no problem  :ninja: but I'm a ninja
with good od pedal you dont need to crank the amp to max output levels to get those high gain sounds.. so at least it works for me

Yeah you'd never crank a dsl401 in your house but it's easily capable of being played at those volumes. I've played the shit out of one at a friends house. Sounds fine at normal volume levels. Speaker is a bit cap though and it's a little mushy without an od boost.
