yeah as far as i've read the system of rehabilitation in the US is fairly useless, mostly because it pays for politicians to use retribution to win votes. 'vote for me, i'm tough on crime, i'll lock em all up'- that kind of thing. most people i think just want to see criminals put away, not thinking about re-integration. that is also why the US has such a high incarceration rate i suppose

i guess rehab

put simply if a guy has no prospects, no job, and mouths to feed, he might steal toprovide for his family,

if he gets caught and does jail time, is it not better that time is used to widen his prospects, to avoid re offence upon release

3 strikes = death penalty.

Whats the point beyond that?

Too many people in the world to give a shit about people who don't give a shit about what they do for their own gain.

would that be 3 strikes on any crime?

for example getting caught shoplifting 3 times shouldnt warrent the same penalty as murder 3 times, plu you'd have people who killed just 1 person, who are a danger to society roaming the streets????

am i misunderstanding?

Three robberies or selling drugs and shit like that and you're done.

1 murder and you're done.
1 rape and you're done.

We know how severe offenses are so lets not act naive.

Life sentences are like.. fucking retarded man. At least to me.

first of all shawn, I'm diggin the avatar.

2nd of all, that's not really how the 3 strike rule works. I know people who have been to prison on more than 3 seperate occasions and are out now.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man convicted of the murder of 270 people in the lockerbie bombing over 20 yrs ago, has been handed over to Libyan authorities due on compassionate grounds. I was just wondering what everyone, especially americans, thinks about this. Most of the 270 killed were american yet he was tried under scottish law.

Do you think it is right to show compassion to a dieing mass murderer? Do you think he was innocent anyway? Do you think its part of a wider political game?

Personally, so long as the man has terminal cancer and he isn't going to see the new year then it shows us to take the moral high ground. Having spoken to friend involved directly with the case I have no doubt of his guilt tho.
somebody who murders that many people dosent deserve it. let him die i have no sympathy for somebody who is obviously guilty of such a hideous crime.

me neither. but his karmic punishment is kinda enough in this case, dont ya tink? I mean the guy has terminal cancer, which is really worse than being in prison.

How about 3 times caught in possession of a small amount of drugs for personal use?  Or 3 times getting drunk and causing a public disturbance or punching someone outside a bar?  Or 3 speeding/parking tickets?  Or being late with your tax returns 3 times?  Or being caught downloading 3 songs/movies/whatever illegally?  Or a combination of any of the 3?

1 speeding ticket, 1 time caught with an 8th of pot and half a gram of coke and then one time punching a drunk guy who groped your girlfriend in a bar?  Spread over the course of say, 5 or 6 years.  Worth the death penalty?

Well yeah, obviously it doesn't work like that because the 3 strikes and you get killed rule doesn't exist.  I'm asking Shawn how it would work in his Thunderdome version of the universe.

I don't think he has to think about that. If he gets questioned he can just call it strike three and kill the guy.

For people who can't stay out of trouble..

I'd have straight up labor camps. Straight up farm work or making something from 9-5 like ever other American who's not milking the system has to do.

If they can't function in society and are fucking it up, let them spend a few weeks or years in the steel factories earning their bed, food and roof.

None of that bullshit sitting around all day making gangs and basically having fun in the playground "jail" has become to these worthless pieces of shit.

Thunderdome!

Fuck if I ran a society on an island somewhere that would rock..  :shy:
