without a doubt, the best rock cover.
Good Times, Bad Times by Godsmack

best metal cover:
Cradle Of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name [with lyrics]

both those bands get shit on quite a bit, but listen to the whole songs..... they kick ass....
And just like grim ascension prophecies
My revenge carved deep will be
A grisly plot that reads
Like my filthy white ward spattered with their screams
When My Deviliverers come from fog for me...

I hate Boyle's version of Wild horses.  People need to stop perpetuating this myth that it's in any way decent.

its schmaltzy, indulgent, musical, streisand-esque pish. shes not an amazing singer, shes good. the reason people bought her album is because they feel guilty about making a snap judgement before they heard her sing.

if you like it, fine, but dont pretend it is actually good. we all like some shite stuff and cant be bothered with good stuff. fuck opinion. objectively it is gash.

She has a nice natural tone to her voice, but a limited vocal range.  Good singer, not great.  The public fawning and falling over themselves is nothing more than a load of hand wringing from people who want to show that they've learned they shouldn't always make judgements based on peoples' appearance.  The song itself has been transformed from this...

Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones 1995

Which I think we can all agree is stunning.

Into an utterly soulless power ballad by the numbers, complete with the obligatory black chorus joining her toward the end.  They've killed it completely and in a year or two they'll probably have killed Susan as well.  I hope everyone's gonna be just as comfortable with the part they'll have played in that when it happens.

Dunno if this is technically a cover, seeing as Edgar Allan Poe didn't exactly write music for it originally, but I'm gonna nominate it anyway...

The Lake - Antony and The Johnsons (español)

So when you call axl rose on the forum a great singer you really know he is jsut good?:S
She has a very powerful voice especially for someone of her age, watch any performances of so called divas mariah carey, whitney houston etc and show me at their age how good they are and truthfully they are atrocious in comparison. She is a great singer, why is it embarressing and im meant to admit she is only good, fair enough she looks bad fair enough we all had preconceptions of her to be really terrible but the reason i say she is great is because she genuinely is. Just because you may like other music mainly rock doesnt mean you cant look past that and learn how other styles of music is meant to be. Rather than by judging on the same information you know about rock music.

Actually the majority of my music library is made up of electro and folk music.  I'll also happily admit to being a big Madonna fan and worshipping Kate Bush but feel free to assume that I dislike Subo purely on the basis of being a close-minded rocker.

And while I don't think I've ever described Axl as a 'great' singer, he does have a far wider vocal range than Ms Boyle.  I do happen to think Leona Lewis is an absolutely phenomenal singer; her range and control over her voice across the full breadth of that range is sensational.

But while we're on the subject of Mariah (who I've never really been a fan of), here's her doing another atrocious cover of another 70's rock tune.  Again the song is awful (aided this time by the original version being kinda shite too), but listen to the notes she hits at around 3.21.  That is what I'm referring to when I talk about someone's vocal range.

Mariah Carey - I Want To Know What Love Is (Live) at The X-Factor Italy -11-11-2009-

Like I said, Susan is good, she has more natural singing talent than I do, for instance, I wouldn't call her a brilliant or outstanding singer though.  She has a voice that's perfectly suited to musicals.  Her cover of Wild Horses is god-awful, insipid, uninspiring, bland, monotonous and dull but she's been hyped way beyond recognition so that we could turn her into the feel good story of the year.  And like I also said, next time she has a nervous breakdown and ends up dead or in hospital as a result I hope everyone's comfortable with the part they've played in what happens to her.

Im not sure that having electro and folk plus liking madonna or kate bush its that eceletic. They are still similar song styles, structure, beat, rhythm etc. It is im sorry still in a sense close minded i personally think as it is really usually what people who like rock may listen too. and vice versa for electro and folk.
I certainly agree with you on leona she is awesome. I really liked her cover of oasis' stop crying your heart out. thought it was excellent.
I dont think mariah has been any good since about 1992.
I know what you mean with axls vocal range just many of the pitches are terrible to hear when sung he only has a few good notes which work fine for GNr .I simply think susan boyle has a deeper richer voice with much more rounder pitches than many singers of her age or in similar catergories.
I do agree with you on the humiliation placed around her to begin with as if she was a freak show which is why i think reality tv shouldnt be allowed on air as it is simply cruel much like the worlds fairs of late 19th early 20th century that used african people as a extreme show and something amazing yet smaller than them. I think she has learnt lots on how to deal with the attention she is recieving although it must effect her greatly. I respect her for being her and living in her same house and you know she wont change or move as she just loves to sing not be famous.

Susan Boyle is decent and nothing more, her fame is mainly down to the publics search for a fairly tale.
The ugly duckling has turned into a swan etc..

I don't see how you can say it's a bad cover though, it's not going to make me go out and buy her album or anything, but it is quite pleasant to hear.
