Such a shame that the contemporary music world is now run by the opinions of 16 year old girls.

Indeed. I know this is veering off topic a bit, but that reminds me of the whole X Factor vs RATM thing we had in the UK for the Xmas Number 1 slot. I saw one anti-RATM group on Facebook where a young girl said something along the lines of "Joe should have won because he worked so hard for the past 6 weeks on X Factor and he's pretty". I'm paraphrasing there, but you get the jist of it. I think a lot of people just 'like' (and I use the word loosely) anything that's constantly thrown in their faces. There are some exceptions (obviously), but it doesn't seem like many people go out of their way to 'discover' new and exciting music. It's laziness really... lol

Anyway, I have gone waaaay off topic here... but I'm gonna bring it back :P
I feel that Lady GaGa has only achieved the level of success that she has over the past few months/year because she's got a decent marketing team behind her.

No its also cause she has catchy songs just from a different genre and she is a really good performer with great live shows. Plus lady gaga has done as much hard work as any many self made artists such as gnr. If you look into her before saying random things with no real facts to back it up.

it's ppl that don't understand pop or know anything about pop music critiquing a pop artist.  it's like asking my sister which album is metallica's best.  it's a gnr forum, next time talk about mullets and stone washed jeans if you want informed convo

But why criticise something simply because you dont understand it. :S Thats just ignorance. There is no reason to be blind and not simply do a quick web search before replying and have a look into her history or for example any other topic on here.

I like pop (for example; I think Pink's fantastic - she has great lyrics and catchy melodies). I like metal. I even like some classical. It's just that I don't see the fascination with Lady GaGa - in my opinion, her songs are irritating.

I've always had this image with pop singers and their labels.

First.. they get a song someone else wrote.
Then they have someone else come up with a catchy beat or hook or whatever.
Then they pick out which face would sell that song better.
They get the chick into the studio to record her voice, then tweek the shit till it sounds like all the other pop singers robotic voices.
Throw a video together showing a lot of skin and sexual innuendos.

Walla. Pop song of the year.

Pop is shit. ALL these cookie cutter chicks (Britney, Gaga, Simpson, Cyrus, that kissed a girl chick) ALL of them, are shit.

They sell "whats new and cool" to a generation that lives and dies on being cool today while already trying to find out whats going to be cool tomorrow. Most of the work they do for their "music careers" is done on the red carpet or some club at 2am so as long as it gets on TMZ.

Don't try to pass of that "they don't understand pop" or "talk about mullets" bullshit.  This is a Gn'R forum but its 2010 and the band / music / fan base has evolved.

Nevermind the bollocks.

well certainly that formula applies to many artists in pop music, but not the better ones.  same way with every genre of music.  try comparing old gnr to other bands of that era, if u didn't know better, you'd lump them all together as well.

there's a big difference between lady gaga and acts like britney and jessica simpson.  gaga is a performance artist very aware of her chosen field and works as a performance artist to reflect her influences and to provoke an intended response.   then there are the generic acts who very much follow the formula u described and not realizing that is why you can't accurately critique what you don't understand.

as far as the gnr fanbase, when they were popular, it was very much pop fans who bought most of the records.  the same gnr fans back then also bought def lep albums, paula abdul forever your girl, and george michael's albums.  over the decades, most of the pop fans forgot the band, and the ppl who are fans now are either obsessed with  the 80s pop metal scene or they're axl worshippers... and to reach those groups, you either talk about mullets and wallet chains or axl's housekeeper and nut sweat

I actually looked during that post and all i found was avenged sevenfold just i just said my only interpretation was that yet i was sure if it was right. Plus WTC building 7 was very likely aided to eb dstroyed evidence about its structure and intergrity of strength kinda of proves it. The physics shows it is more likely it was helped to collapse.
Pop isnt shit its simply a different style of music. It was just meant as something softer than rock and roll and now of course rock. It has always been aimed at the younger generation. There are bad pop artists just like there are bad rock artists or any other genre. I think polar has put it very well though (except i think britney is good at times)
Im not entirely sure that liking pop music makes someone 'cool' and i dont think that should ever be in a discussion about any music. I dont get why there are so many sorts of groups that like certain music types or have certain opinions then have a so called 'chip on the shoulder' .

Yeah.. Lady Gaga, her music and her image is shit.
My balls have more talent and would look just as flashy if you came up with 600 weird outfits for them.

Thats your opinion that it will only last a short time and not good. Its a myth that pop artists arent as long lasting as other genres. They are averagely the same some last ages some only a few years. There is no way to tell how long any one will last in the industry although its clear that the main way to stay fresh is by continously changing your style not by doing the same thing over and over. If you look at any successful recording artists over many decades they have had to change and adapt and develop their style.
If anything due to teh fact gaga writes her own songs and has created this love of that style all by herself with many artists now trying to copy her style and many trying to be outrageous,  most failing,  it seems as though she really has a good chance of being able to be in the forefront of pop genre for a good while.
