More ‘live’ than ‘studio’?
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:35:16 PM »
Having had the privilege of attending the second London concert, the Chin Dem songs got me thinking. Having only seen a few of the songs live in person on the 2006 tour, I had always viewed the songs as purely studio ones. However, following the London concert, I’ve had to re-evaluate my views. I think Axl views the songs as more ‘live’ than ‘studio’ as he allows the songs to evolve as the tour progresses, allowing for them to develop a sound different to their studio counterparts. For example, Madagascar is much heavier live and IRS has a much better groove live.

Thoughts?

i certainly agree about the groove IRS has. the chorus has a far bigger pay-off live.

dont know, or think it particularly matters, how axl views the album. its pretty natural that as the band plays the songs month after month they'll alter them, either through choice or evolution.

Sorry is more epic live. Although it's epic already. ChiDem is more groovie and bouncy live.
Ask yourself.

Slash played well, but Robin wrote Better.

Shackler's Revenge is epic live,
The changing of "the musical line" of the vocals sounds great and really fits into the song.
I also was amazed by the vocal range of Axl Rose, I know he can sing high and low, but you need to hear it live to really know and understand how high and low he can sing..

And when I heard madagascar live,
it sounded exectly the same as the studio version,
because, I walked away from the concert 3rd october when they were playing that song (Yes I had no other choice, and now I regret it that I missed the rest of the encore)
But when me and my twin brother stood outside the building and we were singing madagascar,
we put on the studio version, and it sounded exectly the same for the vocals,
instrumental were a bit different but also, it sounded awsome,

also an co-worker at the place where I work said: that Guns N' Roses couldn't peform live, because it doens't sound great,
The only thing that they were good at was making studio albums,
He also said that he went to 1 concert and that was in '93 at the Kuip in Rotterdam.
I think that is bullcrap, because, 3rd october it really was an awsome show and it sounded great..
So when I got back to work, I said to him that the band can peform live and that it sounded awsome.

IRS live is certainly epic. ChiDem is another that works great live. Probably because the foundations of each of those tracks are quite simplistic to begin with. ChiDem is certainly an album that sounds better in the studio though. AFD sounds better live - i rarely listen to the album or studio takes, always live boots on youtube. UYI is somewhere in between. YCBM and Nov Rain come across really great live. Is it coincidence that those songs were written before/around the time the AFD material was?

Madagascar, as mentioned, is spectacular live. Really awesome and powerful.

Sorry live kicks ass. That chorus after "just shut up and sing" rocks.

+1

and also the guitar solo is kick ass live,
Sorry is a song, when played live, that's just strong, mostly, keeping the rythm tight as it should be.

Shackler's is an awesome live song, sorry too.   If the world sounded badass live, shame they seem to have dropped it
