US and UK 'special relationship'
« on: February 25, 2010, 05:26:02 AM »
So, I'd like some opinions from both sides of the pond.

The only people in the UK who believe that America is our 'friend' are the politicians. Do the American people care about the alliance? Do the US politicians care about the alliance? If Britain pulled out of Afghanistan to fight in the Falklands, what would America do?

Blair and Bush clearly had bum sex at Bush's ranch in Texas before the invasion of Iraq. Who fucked who is the question.

Bush needed blair to go with him into both afghanistan and iraq to make it more credible thats clear. The US definatly dont care as much as UK did although im not sure what the situation is now with Gordon Brown. I think if the UK pulled out then the US would have to start to wrap up the war in afghanistan and just finish rebuilding and leave as if UK went, the US would be seen as no need to still be there. Whether that is actually the truth or not is another question. As all the damage done simply couldnt be put right without going. But maybe its not the army they need it seems more like support.

I think Britain will do everything it can to cling on to this notion of a 'special relationship' with the States, because without it we'd have to begin to accept a place in the world on a par with our actual size and relative degree of importance and that would involve a bit of a fall from grace for us.  peculiarly enough it's likely to be the little britainers who think that because we once had an empire, we're forever entitled to a major say in the running of the planet who are likely to be least impressed by our sucking up to America, but also would be the most outraged were our standing on the world stage ever to fall.

As for the Americans, I don't think they really care any more about us than anyone else, after all, why would they?

I think Americans have been comfortable in knowing there is an alliance with the UK for many years now.   and all the work in the 80's with international friendship I think the Americans rally'd behind that which was evident in many funny movies  :unibrow:    Spy's like us   :D
What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

we probably actually get alot more stuff than we'll ever know about. information would probably be a large part of this (although how useful this information is probably debatable), beyond that we are probably allowed access to a great deal of technology that otherwise would be outwith our reach.

in truth though, its not for the benefits that we bend over, but the prospect of what and where we'd be without this apparent special relationship.

Yeah, good luck with that..

And I would have to say America rightly belongs to the Native Americans, like the Navajo, and Apaches.

Who knows what the terms of the war agreements were. Perhaps exclusive access to a few Iraqi oilfields for BP and Shell. I think Afghanistan is much more about politics and power in Asia than getting anything tangible per se.

All I can say is, we'd better get a special price for the new F-35s which we've ordered.

Once again, the lovable lumbering buffoon which is Jeremy Clarkson leads the way in political comment.

I actually think us American's consider you British like cousins. I don't see us not having each others back at any point. We here really appreciate that you guys have supported us and stood with us against this world wide problem of terrorism.

I think Obama did a good job of shitting on the British higher ups and that might have kind of put a little distance between us BUT, in the end (I hope) our countries will always stand together when needed.

I really don't understand the whole Falklands thing but if you guys are in the right, and there is an injustice going on then we should definitely have your back. Especially if any other country should join up against you.

Downplay us, hate us, blame us for everything thats wrong in the world but know that in the end we'll be there for you.

I think if Britain went to war and was losing, and even if Obama didn't want to send troups, American's themselves would demonstrate and rally in hopes of moving our government to help.

As long as you guys don't suddenly ally yourselves with China, Russia or Iran, we should be cool.

I actually have a LOT of love for the UK and the peeps there.

I also think the English accent on your chicks are the fucking best.
