LONDON — Monitored by millions of cameras and spied on by a secretive domestic intelligence network, Britons could be forgiven for feeling up in arms over the latest threat to their privacy: Intelligent garbage bins that can monitor how much they throw out.

Although the technology is already nearly a decade old, a U.K. privacy rights group says the number of local authorities fitting their trash bins with sensors of some kind has risen dramatically in the past year — affecting at least 2.6 million British households.

In 2006, then-British environment minister Ben Bradshaw told Britons that they might someday have to pay for the amount of waste they produce — arguing that the practice would push people to waste less, promote recycling and reduce pressure on landfills. His successor David Miliband moved to lift a ban which prevented local officials for offering financial incentives for recycling — further clearing the way for the use of garbage-monitoring microchips.

... that seriously took me less than 1 minute to google, copy, paste, and type an insult....  Associated Press btw

In the interests of impartiality.

Although I can't say I ever found the idea of microchips in wheelie bins too disturbing.  It's always been a bit of a joke more than anything.

So how many people have been prosecuted as a result of the information gleaned from the microchips?

whoa what microchips?  the ones that you said don't exist?  what happened to "I'd rather be dead than be red" ???

besides, who brought up "prosecution" ... it's about setting up taxes, at least at this point

I really need to teach you how to read some time

You're just making it worse for yourself. Read my posts again, where/when did I say they don't exist... How much do you charge for reading lessons?

So basically, these chips aren't really doing anything at the moment. When they are being used, I'll take notice.

I've got no time for hysterical fools. Time and time again, Polar, you seem to fall for the hype from shitty newspapers. Do you remember that Iran didn't really do anything on the 11th of whatever. Nevertheless, it doesn't stop you from being rude to those who don't share your hysterical gullibility.

read your posts retard.  I said that they planned a pay as you throw tax my using microchips to monitor your garbage.  you denied this and said prove it, which i did, even tho it's common knowledge.  you're just embarassed you got caught out of the loop

and about that quote from Iran, you denied the quote existed, I proved it did.  once again, you got caught off guard and got embarassed

you keep trying to shift the convo.  the fact is you know jack shit about world news.  first you deny it, then you when you can't deny it anymore you say it doesnt really matter

PATRIOT ACT.

We should really be worried about potential nanny state intrusion into the weight of our wheelie bins at some unspecified point in the future which may or may not ever happen and you're ok with your government being able to search properties without warrant and access your phone calls and e-mails?

You're right, we're sitting here simpering, beggin our government to walk all over us, unlike that well armed militia the 2nd amendment makes y'all so proud of being a part of.

trust me, some of the shit we are doing in the US is downright scary as fuck.  the Patriot act is only 1 of several orwellian nightmares we need to purge.  We are now installing naked body scanners in several airports, to be followed by train stations, bus stations, who knows after that... malls and ball games?

not to mention the whole Einstein cybersecurity program they are talking about, i could go on at how bad the US is trying to be like the UK and other euro countries.  they want to de-value our dollar and make us end up with our version of the Euro currency...  trust me it's a battle every day.

and yes, studies show that ppl in the UK actually want nanny state policies, that's old news.  not sure why you would deny it.
