Slash says he'll "probably" sing someday.
« on: July 04, 2010, 10:41:30 AM »
This article appeared in the July 4 issue of the Sunday Mail.
In the article,Slash says he's always been too nervous to sing - but says he'll "probably" do so at some time in the future.

So, what do you think - would you like to hear Slash sing?
Do you this is wise? Would Axl be laughing - or afraid?

GUNS N' ROSES GUITARIST WOWED SCOTS FANS BUT...: Music legend's secret fear

GUITAR legend Slash showed no fear when playing in front of 70,000 strong audiences in stadiums around the world with US rockers Guns N' Roses.

But ask him to step up to the microphone and sing and he runs for cover - gripped by nerves.

The 44-year-old musician has revealed he was forced to abandon plans to sing on his new solo album because he feared he'd never be able to pull it off. Instead, Slash made a list of his favourite vocalists, then asked them to perform his new songs.

The result is an impressive debut album, titled Slash, which features collaborations with Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy of Motorhead, Kid Rock and Myles Kennedy.

Slash, who also tasted success with Velvet Revolver, knew he was on a winner when his hero Iggy Pop called him up and began singing his song down the telephone after he sent him a CD of the music.

Last week, the guitarist wowed a capacity audience at the HMV Picture House in Edinburgh on a UK tour to launch the new album.

Backstage, the British-born superstar, whose real name is Saul Hudson and who was raised in Stoke-on-Trent before taking US citizenship, told me: "When I first started playing guitar I did sing a little.

"But I quickly realised other people were more capable of the whole persona of being a frontman.

"I didn't even sing on the demos for the album.

"I will probably at some point in my career break down and sing something.

"But this record was more of an open canvas for my favourite singers to come in and do whatever they wanted."

Slash also loved working with Fergie, sexy singer of Black Eyed Peas, on the track Beautiful Dangerous. He said:"I wanted a female voice and she came up with some of best lyrics on the album."

In 1985, Slash became a music phenomenon with Guns N' Roses and his 11-year career with the US band included chart topping albums Appetite For Destruction and Use Your Illusion I and II.

Record sales of 110million include their hit songs Sweet Child O'Mine, with his classic guitar riff intro, Paradise City and Welcome To The Jungle.

He split from Guns N' Roses in 1996 after a bitter fued with vocalist Axl Rose.

everybody should sing.

and why bring Axl into it.

If somebody making music... wants to sing then they should sing.
What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

Axl: I said I'm going on ChiDem now and he said whatever & walked away other than that I've been busy.

Well, if Slash releases a record where he sings as well as plays guitar, it would speak volumes if his records sold more than Axl's "new GNR" efforts.  Wouldn't you agree?

Personally, I don't think either one would be a clear winner when it comes to record sales, as I think both of them create the best music when they work together.

I don't even know how to even .....

Speak volumes if his records sell more? on some sort of personal level? industry level?   to me no.  I don't care about that line of thinking.  I only listen to music for the music.  Whatever marketing there is after that is what it is.   For example, I hear better music down the street from a musician who is lucky to make $1000 a month than somebody I hear on the radio with a full record contract or is making fat cash selling millions or thousands or records.    So no...   it doesn't mean a damn thing

you don't measure a "winner" by sales.   music speaks volumes for itself.

Well, that theory sounds good on paper- and I agree to a point.

But at the end of the day, if Slash sold more records than Axl, Axl would blow a gasket.  Please don't even pretend Axl wouldn't care because we all know that he would.

There's a reason Axl took so many years to finish the album - and why he played tracks in strip clubs and at private parties to get fan reaction long before the album was ever released. Clearly, he cared about what fans thought of the record and didn't want to fail.  His anger toward Slash would reach astronomical levels  if Slash decided to sing and somehow sold more records than he could.  I'm not saying Slash will necessarily sell more albums - in fact, I think he would probably just sell a comparable number to Axl's CD.   But if he did sell more, Axl would not be a happy camper.

What a bunch of stupidity in just one post.

No he doesn't care! If he cared so much about the sales he would have promoted CD as normal artists does even with the circunstances that he was in with management!
Slash would never out sell Axl by singing on a record... Theres also a reason why Axl left the idea of playing guitar in shows behind in 2001. As he said "lack of skill", same to Slash singing!
The reason behind Axl showing the cd in parties had nothing to do with promotion, as the people in the parties were mostly personal friends and Axl did the friendly act of showing stuff from his cd. It was not intended to be promotional otherwhise Axl would have invited the media there, which didnt happen...

haha.. wtf you guys are the worst.

That dude is the worst too.

It would be cool to hear Slash singing on a straight up old school blues sounding album.

Don't care much about who sings better LOL, but I do think Axl would be pissed if Slash's albums sold more.

They're both industry. I'm sure, no matter what the bastards say to be good sports, that they've both peeked at each others numbers.

Sorry if the truth hurts.
But no need to resort to juvenile name-calling.
Random strippers in a strip club are hardly "personal friends."  Clearly he was looking for feedback - any kind of feedback - or he wouldn't have done it.

Finally somebody who sees reality and isn't living in a fantasy world.
Of course Axl would care if Slash sold more albums than he did. Anybody who suggests otherwise is in denial.

if that's all you are asking.... if he cares... then uhh sure. but doesn't speak 'volumes' on who is a music 'winner'.

:D this dude is totally original and I have listenned to him more times than the new Slash album

but

'By the sword' -  Good song I can totally get high to

'Watch This'  is the best thing on the album

'Saint is a sinner too'  is very good ...  I was just waiting for some bullshit straightup nonsense but it kept its mood right and low.

'We're all gonna die' is a good time -  bit too straight up for me but the vocals save the song. kool riff.  songs tanks last minute though.

song with Ozzy could have been much better.....   as the song goes on just fails.

Fergie's song is interesting

the rest is .................
