Upgrading my Peavey Classic 20 Amp
« on: July 17, 2010, 05:16:58 AM »
Not been playing much  :'(  This is tragic for me and going on too long.

Anyway I will attempt to get organized and maybe find some depressed dark shit deep inside to chase out along the way and beyond this road.

I have stock Peavey Classic 20 amp  -  10 inch blue marvel speaker -

Tubes

So I ordered tubes from EuroTubes -  JJ's - My amp is fixed bias so I should just be able to pop the new tubes right in.

Quote
Peavey Classic 20 High gain option
Price: 46.00
Description: A matched pair of the JJ EL84's for power along with a hand picked high gain ECC83S for maximum gain in V1 and a graded ECC83S with a high current output in V2. Smooth and warm. Just let me know in the comments box on the check out page if your looking for max headroom, moderate or an early breakup so I can select a proper grade for the power tubes.

Only complaint is that they charged me $30 shipping  :?:  you can see the peavey tube kits here. I picked the high gain option, I hope it is a good choice but I'm not so sure.  https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.php?page=view_products&category_id=8&sub_category_id=77

Speaker

The stock speaker is complete rubbish. Its also only 10 inches. 12" speaker will not fit it without modding much. So this leaves me at a crossroad....    Do I buy a Weber Speaker? and if so which one?  Silver Bell or something form the Classic series?  Ceramic or AlNiCo?

Upgrading the speaker would be a cheaper option than buying an extension cab. BTW the ext cab would terminate the 10" speaker. But I really think I would be happier with a good 1x12 like the Orange PPC112 that has a 60 watt Celestion Vintage '30 -  Hell I'd like a greenback but they don't come with that stock, but the Vintage 30 has a nice sparkle yet meaty sound but its rated higher for watts and not sure if too much for the amp (probably not).

So do you think I'm on the right track or do you have any suggestions?

I hear the Webber speakers are good...but maybe check out the Jensen P10R. I think I have the 12" version in my amp

I've used DV a number of times before. Excellent service and they price match...

yea I think for now I'm not even going to bother upgrading the 10" speaker and go with a 1x12...  set the amp right on top

Phase one is complete

Last night after work....  I put the new JJ's in.  and I felt like I was tube surfing.  :O  I couldn't have it loud because it was midnight in the apt complex.   but had master on 8 and volume on like 1 or less lol.  and wow what a big difference.  I can't wait to open her up.

Was well worth it so far.  I looked at the old tubes and there is no writings on them.. so don't know what they are.

Phase 2 will be the ext. cab with a Vintage 30  :D   Its gonna sound like the devil and feel like sex

now last night... at about 11pm.  I tried Master at around 7 or 8 and volume on 6

whole other beast  started to spit at me. I shot right back with a Fulltone 70's Fuzz and it roared.

So far so good with the JJ set I got from Eurotubes. The amp is so much more focused and so much less brittle.

I wonder wat the 1x12 will do  :ninja:  So does my credit card.

I feel at this point I should point out that I've been asking you to sell me this amp for about 5 years now and you still haven't done it yet...

What tubes are you using Sean?

I've been thinking about swapping out the factory ones from my MoFo...but tubes are one of the thigns I've never really looked into. I've heared they can make a hell of a difference though.

The vintage 30 speaker?   I have had 2 of  them in a marshal 4x12 before. It spoke Slash UYI like mad.  Yea lots of extra sparkle in the sound and very responsive.  I enjoy the speaker but I hope I can appreciate it as much as I did with greenbacks (but that was with a 4x12 cab :D) .  I dig greenback's man!!   The v30 colors a bit. We'll see ... I know its a great speaker still.
