They did it because Ben Collins felt it was unfair that the rest of the Top Gear crew can make money out of Autobiography's and the such and he couldn't.

I'm was thinking that too, wasn't it revealed about 4 months ago? But it seemed like not much fuss was made about it. Maybe he wanted to build up the hype.
