Religious Trolling Par Excellence

Controversial Florida church holds 'burn a Koran' day to commemorate 9/11 victims

An American church has been urged to call off a plan to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks. Muslim and Christian groups have condemned the protest saying it will only escalate tensions between the two faiths. But despite death threats to its members, the Florida-based Dove World Outreach Centre has refused to back down. The controversial church even claims they have received thousands of  messages  of support for their stand against what they call an 'evil religion'.

The church's pastor Terry Jones has called on other religious groups to join in his 'International Burn a Koran Day' on the ninth anniversary of the terror attack on New York city and Washington DC. 'Islam and Sharia law was responsible for 9/11,' said Jones. 'We see the effects of Islam on Europe. As it has done nothing, Islam is beginning to take over there. Islam is presenting itself as a religion of  peace.
'We want to stop its spread here.'

Jones said the mass burning of the Koran - the holy book of the Muslim  religion - will take place on the grounds of the church in Gainesville, Florida, on the morning of September 11th.    The event has been publicised on the church's Facebook page where they have   received over 1,500 messages of support.

The church, which boasts over 300 members, is no stranger to controversy having spoken out against homosexuality and abortion. Last year they put up a sign on their grounds that read 'Islam is the Devil'  triggering numerous threats to burn the church down.
US officials are powerless to stop the protest which has  been condemned by The  National Association of Evangelicals. Church leaders warned the Koran burning would be offensive to Muslims as well as Christians.A spokesman said: 'The proposed burning of Korans would be profoundly offensive to Muslims worldwide, just as Christians would be insulted by the burning of Bibles.
'Such an act would escalate tensions between members of the two faiths in  the  United States and around the world. 'The most powerful statement by the organisers of the planned September 11th   bonfire would be to call it off in the name and love of Jesus Christ.'

The condemnation comes as plans for a mosque near the Ground Zero site in  New  York have been given the green light.
The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission yesterday turned down a proposal  granting protected status to a 19th century building that a Muslim group would like to transform into a community centre.

The position of the mosque, several hundred yards from where the Twin Towers once stood, has angered family members of the 3,000 victims who died in  the  terror attacks. The Al Qaeda launched attack was carried out in the name of Islam by Osama  bin Laden.
The organisation behind the facility, the Cordoba Initiative, insist they are not building a mosque but a community centre that will include a prayer centre able to hold five-times-a-day Islamic prayers.   It is also promising to include a memorial to the victims of 9/11. Former presidential candidate Sarah Palin has criticised the mosque plan which has divided many New Yorkers.

Fuck it. Burn the korans. they can if they want. Just as i could burn a bible if i wanted to. It makes not the slightest bit of difference to me but obviously it's a stupid provocative idea, probably in the name of publicity for that church than in the name of any reasonable christian believers.

Saw these on Anderson Cooper last night. What a tosser. He is so self contradictory it's ridiculous. I'd say let it fly, but being that there's a fair chance that American troops might get shit for this(by shit I mean killed, tortured, harassed in Iraq/Afgh) it's not that easy.

Well.. we're getting shit either way so fuck it. If one dude wants to and thinks that this will send a fuck you to them then fuck it.

I was actually thinking about doing something like this the day that mosque opens but right in front of the place but it seems really childish when you really think about doing it.

It DOES piss me off when I see them burning American flags on the regular though. Those images of them celebrating 9-11 with the flag burnings and street parties really pissed me off.

For those who think this would make them mad at us.. aren't they already? On 9-10 I'm sure if any American found himself in their hands they would have been tortured and killed regardless.

Also.. Is it wrong to say that Islam DID cause 9-11?
Like Catholicism DID cause some of the crusades?

i wouldnt say "wrong" as such but the idea that all people of Islamic faith were for 9/11 would be ridiculous. It was a bunch of fundamentalists. to tarnish everyone with the same brush is ignorant. A better way would be to say that all organised religion provides a logical pathway to the commiting of atrocities. Rather than single out one faith, for one incident, albeit a rather large incident.

What i want to know is, why this pastor thinks that burning the koran is fine, as opposed to say, the bible? What possible justification does he have for his faith over someone elses? Why does he think his faith is the correct one? Evidence? clearly not. It's stupidity. nothing more. nothing less.

shawn, if you want to be judged by eleventh century principles and compare two organisations that are run completely differently then go ahead. it only highlights your ignorance of history and the structures of the roman catholic and islamic faiths. Maybe you should go ahead and burn some copies of the koran tho; it'll put US troops in greater danger, but its in such a worthwhile cause.

mooney, tecniqually the pastor should have no problem with others burning the bible. unlike islam, christianity doesnt deify its text. it would be wrong for a christian to denounce bible burning from a scriptural p.o.v. (how could a series of writings conculded in the 2nd century b.c.e. demand protection when they werent turned in a book for hundreds of years?), whereas the koran is sacred to those wacky muslims. And this is why the actions are so, ahem, imflammatory.

2na..

I think you're wrong buddy. I think Islam could very well be at fault just like Catholicism, or really who was in charge up there, was at fault back then.

We like to try and draw a line between these people and their religion but dude.. there is no line. Each and every one of them claims to do it in the name of Allah and claims that what they do is what their good book and faith requires of them.

You seem to dislike religion no? It seems you get defensive when someone shuns Muslims but  EVERYTHING can be blamed on the Christian this or that.

Its thinking like yours that baffles me. Like this straight up appeasement we seem to have to be required to have towards Muslims while everything is the Christians fault. I'm not saying that Christians are flawless at all mind you just that people seem to keep trying to again draw a line between the people and their fucked up religion.

And I TOLD you he was Muslim! :shy:
I honestly think the dude doesn't care what religion he is, what people he supports, what his agenda is, where his money comes from or anything, as long as it makes whoever is in front of him like and support him and keeps him and his, in power.

Catholicism is a centralized power, anything that happens comes from the papacy. Islam is bereft of leaders and any actions taken is done by independent cells. That why its ridiculous to compare recent islamic terror with the crusades.

As for the rest of your post, its not even close to being representative of my views
