Yesterday in the 'how do you feel now' thread I placed a youtube video to show how I feel. Anyway I commented on the video after watching it. I think the message sucks and I would like to see how you guys and gals see it. Maybe its fine for you...   but does it give the right message?

whatever we need bold statement we have kids losing their life to drugs,gangs and the prison system. Im trying to keep kids away crime drugs and gang violence terror is being 16years old locked up for the rest of your life so say what you want to about me but Im out here trying to make a difference. This is hogwash. What the hell. I hate the saying "because I said so", it is ridiculous, it does not encourage critical thinking, or thinking at all. It encourages bowing down to authority, just because they are authority. Which I completely disagree with. Think for yourself. That is what parents should be encouraging.

of course children should listen to their parents.  adults should think for themselves

I'm not saying that all kids should questions every single thing their parents are saying and be difficult, I'm just saying that it's ok to ask questions and parents should encourage critical thinking at an early age. Not just go "because I said so" whenever a child asks questions. I do understand that kids can be frustrating and always asking questions, but it's natural to be curious and I see it as a good thing. If you want somebody that sits still and shuts up, I would recommend using a condom and hanging out with adults.

i assume you're a teenager, so you are of the age where you think you know everything, so i assume you think that you're smarter than your parents, and maybe you are, but it probably explains why you are so spirited about the topic

Right away of course! Without mad parenting and bad schooling (which almost all of both are) kids of average intelligence can become emotionally independent by 4, financially independent by 10.

Polar you are missing our point completely.   Bold statements to get a point across using fear isn't rational.  Also the kids in the video aren't babies, and the ones in prison look to be adults. Its a stupid video.

You don't seem to get the point. I'm not saying let the kids go as soon as they can walk, they'll figure it out on their own. I'm saying giving kids freedom gradually, encouraging critical thinking at an early age is good, explaining shit so they can better understand the world, instead of turning of the TV as soon as someone talks about war or crime.... Sheltering kids until they go to college then tell them to "not drink and not have sex" = fail at parenting, oh you're 18, now you can start forming your own opinion and making decisions. Good luck with that. You're supposed to prepare them for the real world.

And my parents raised me pretty well, thanks for asking. I am in school, got a decent academic scholarship/paying for everything myself, A's, travel all over the country in the weekends, bought my own car in August, paid in full, tutor job on campus... I think I'm doing OK, and guess what, my parents let me make my own decisions when it comes to many things gradually and encouraged me to watch the news and be independent. Oh and they let me watch the Pianist when I was like 12, it doesn't seem like it hurt me that much. When I moved out of their house I was actually somewhat prepared to handle the real world, if you ever can be. But what do I know. Not saying that I don't make a shitload of mistakes and do stupid shit, but I'm not doing too bad for how horrible my parents raised me, right? Of course parents have years and years of life experience and usually know best, but I think most kids need to make their own mistake and try things out for themselves.
Besides, I trust years of studies and proof that this is the kind of parenting that actually works a little bit. Look at abstinence preaching and no sex ed...see how well that is working, buddy.

The whole point of raising kids is to teach them to think for themselves, the earlier they start to do it the better off everyone will be, as long as you show them good values and morals.

There is no age that must define when you need to make grown up decisions on your own. Your parents can tell you not to steal, but in the end it is you deciding not to steal, this is not exactly listening to your parents, but making a conscious decision based on values you have learned.
