What are Axl's Favourite Films?
« on: December 09, 2010, 06:24:35 AM »
The Civil War intro suggests Axl liked Cool Hand Luke, and he likes Batman and Dexter of course.  Catcher is a literary influence.

I saw No Country for Old Men recently, and thought Axl'd relate to the Tommy Lee Jones 'Anton Chigurh' character, as he is single-minded in his work and values honour above money.

Wild One, Rebel Without a Cause, Badlands and First Blood are some other oldies Axl might have liked or related to?

Any others come to mind?

He is a fan of Interview With A Vampire. I remember reading that Slash didn't enjoy the film at all when he watched an advance screening and decided not to do Sympathy For The Devil for it, suggesting that they use the original instead. Apparently, Axl the saw the following day and came our raving about it, insisting they do the tune.

I know he watched Kundun, cause he talks about it during the HOB 2001 show and how it was kinda sorta almost not really the inspiration for CD.

Here is the speech about Kundun:
The movie Kundun was on [television] about the Dalai Lama. I was getting ready to leave...and it was the end of the movie. And the Dalai Lama is about to cross over the border, to you know, be in exile for the rest of his life from his own country. And he looks back at the men who helped him, and you know he's escaped the Chinese government. And he looks back at them and he waves and they wave at him. And then they show a scene where he looks back at them again and he sees every one of them dead. Because he knew they would be killed, and they knew that in helping him they would be killed. And you know the emotion in this next song, that's all that's about. It's not like an intelligent song. It doesn't have the answer to anything. And it's not necessarily pro or con about China. It's just that right now China symbolizes one of the strongest, yet most oppressive countries and governments in the world. And we [Americans] are fortunate to live in a free country. And so in thinking about that it just kinda upset me, and we wrote this little song called "Chinese Democracy."

tommy lee jones was the cop, not anton chigurh.  also, i don't see how axl is honorable.  he holds grudges and throws baby fits, not sure where the honor fits in lol.  maybe you mean he only cares about his own whims and follows them even when it doesn't serve him?

Yeh, all Terrence Malick's four movies are cool.  He's like a director parallel to Axl, only making films he's really happy with, and going for the epic.
