Cyber Bullying
« on: January 23, 2011, 03:19:23 AM »
I think that this might be a good thread for any internet/forum newbies.

(not only because i am a teach...)

Is it possible for you people in the know to list here, what counts as cyber bullying?

I know there are obvious ones and less obvious visual ones.

eg. amateur hackers can put an "update now?" or "checking for viruses" pop up into one's system...

What are some of the other ones?

im not entirely sure what we are supposed to do here but surely cyber bullying is exactly the same as regular bullying just via the internet? obviously that would exclude physical abuse but name calling or anything said designed to be both personal and hurtful... deliberately targeted at someone... this seems painfully obvious though so...? :retard:

More to the point,

I'm wondering if people can list instances of cyber bullying that they come across whilst on the net.

For example,  'random' popups....

"update ready now"

"checking for virus"

(Don't assume it's Microsoft or Windows, just because it looks like it is coming from them)

Stuff like that that usually isn't in your computer system, but is a little unusual...

If you're not sure, still list here, the 'randon' stuff that happens on whilst your on the net, even if it is aliitle strange.

A recent one I had, was...

although I am using a superfast internet connection, it became suddenedly jammed, slowed down considerably. You know the green 'traffic' bar that fills with little rectangles as you move from one web page to another.... well that only went half way, as if I was blocked up or  abit slow or something....

Weird visuals like that, all count as subtle (or maybe not so subtle) internet bullying.

So basically, let's start making a little of those little random "technical problems" that might come up....

Stuff that you think is alittle strange  :ninja:

Even take a screen shot and post it if you can

I don't think what you're referring to is 'cyber bullying'. More like hacking, spyware, viruses... Completely unrelated to cyber bullying.

Actually no. Hacking is hacking regardless of the purpose. People have been hacking people to fuck up their computers/life since the beginning of the PC.

Cyber bullying is a new term, and I believe it is more related to the social networking thing...where kids are bullying other people by posting humiliating shit on their walls or what ever.

If you believe that cyberbullying is just that, then you are very very naive (or defensive?)

I am a teacher, you would have no idea of the categories of abuse that we have to identify in the classroom.

Cyber bullying as does abuse, has many forms.

    As far as social networking

I say its like anything on the streets.  You know what streets to walk down and to stay away.  I think every web site should be in full control (edit: by its makers) and Big Brother to keep the off the internet. Now sites like FB that use your real name etc etc... there is the the delete friends button.  done.

as far as spam and virus sites.   :unibrow: I haven't even used anti-virus in years, I only choose certain sites and have a good eye for tricks  (home based 1 personal pc of course not in an enterprise environment). I just wait until windows fails...  maybe a little less than a year and reinstall.   :D  and when using a mac I don't worry about virus at all.

What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

Axl: I said I'm going on ChiDem now and he said whatever & walked away other than that I've been busy.

so for example.....    if Polar tells somebody on a forum in 2002 to  /wrists.  And then the username disappears. I don't think Polar should be liable...  neither should the website owner.      :paranoid:

Now the website can have rules and choose to edit anyway they feel like running their site.

If you believe that cyberbullying is just that, then you are very very naive (or defensive?)

I am a teacher, you would have no idea of the categories of abuse that we have to identify in the classroom.

Cyber bullying as does abuse, has many forms.

Look. Hacking is abuse, we can all agree on that. In general, people do not like hackers, although the gov will be glad to hire you if you've got some serious skill. Call it bullying if you want, but the way I have seen the term used has been concerning simple things like hateful e-mails, texts, facebook messages etc. If I hack into your computer. It is called HACKING. Regardless of my reasons for doing this. If I install spyware on your computer...to read your emails and monitor what sites you go on because I hate you and I want to slander you. It is still spyware that I installed. That is all I said. You can call all of this cyber bullying if you'd like, but that is not how I have seen the term used. I did a quick google search on cyber bullying... who knows, maybe what I thought was the definition was completely false.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Cyber-bullying has been defined as "when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person",[2] or as "when an electronic device is used to attack or defame the character of a real person. Often embarrassing or false information about the victim is posted in an online forum where the victim and those who know the victim can see it publicly."[3] Other researchers use similar language to describe the phenomenon.[4][5]

Cyber-bullying can be as simple as continuing to send e-mail to someone who has said they want no further contact with the sender, but it may also include threats, sexual remarks, pejorative labels (i.e., hate speech), ganging up on victims by making them the subject of ridicule in forums, and posting false statements as fact aimed at humiliation.

....Looks like wikipedia, and ze google search is on my side. I could give you further examples and news articles who use the term in context, where my claims are also supported. Or you could just do a google search yourself.

What you are referring to is more like computer crimes...a term that covers all the terms I use above..hacking, spyware etc.

bullying is about power and demonstrating that power to belittle somebody's ego for sport

picking a pocket of somebody on the street isn't bullying, it's theft.  theft isn't bullying.  spying isn't bullying.  mining data for marketing isn't bullying

this thread is stupid and if this barbivon whatever is actually a teacher, that explains a lot
