Atlas Shrugged Trilogy
« on: February 12, 2011, 05:54:36 PM »
back in the early 90s the book of the month club ran a survey of the most influential books ever, behind the Bible, atlas shrugged came in 2nd.  it's a movie that's taken like 50 years to make.  she sold the rights a long time ago, and with no stipulations, but for whatever reason they never made any kind of movie.  yesterday they released a trailer, looks ok, not sure how close to the source material

Atlas Shrugged Trailer

i've read the book a few times.  IMO, it's way too long, she makes the same point over and over and over and adds in a bunch of speeches to support her points, but it's still a provoking read.  I predict the movie will flop, but i'll go see the first one at least

:shy:   this movie took 50 years to make??

I have thought about this at times that if I was a movie maker  :paranoid: to make a movie over decades  to see the actual aging of the actors.   that would rule.  as the shooting can take place before historic events even.

What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

exactly!!   that would truefully make the movie epic...   but forget Pitt...       our star has to be younger now and upcoming.  Traveling the desert at 40 years old popping pills in a red 70's convertable....   (20 year earlier >>>>> )  music kicks in and he dropping college cuzzzz he is MR. Cyber Gonzo.....   whatever.   lives the life,   runs worldwide from Tom Hanks,   he is CIA's number one target.

But i'm incapable of saying anything in a thread about Miss Rand without just descending into a rant about the horrible, misogynistic, hateful person she was.  I also find the personality cult she generated around herself very troubling.

And the whole 'ethical egoism' thing is one of the most abhorrent philosophical principles I've ever come across.  To even put the word ethical in there is insulting.

"What are your masses but mud to be ground underfoot, fuel to be burned for those who deserve it?"

Uh, ok.

And to be honest, as someone so incredibly opposed to taxation and state intervention in pretty much anything, I don't really understand the logic of her simultaneous fierce opposition to anarchism.  In short I don't think she ever managed to work out the contradictions in her own philosophy with the result that it doesn't actually stand up to examination.

I may go see it, the trailer does make it look frightfully dull though.

that's rly taken out of context, and not her view.  i could be wrong, but i'll argue her philosophy if you like.  her personal character means little to me, tho i enjoy her interviews.  ad hominem argument tho.  kinda like your glenn beck arguments

yeah, for entertainment value, i'm sure it sucks ass, but i'll prly see it too

this is the part of her philosophy that i like and i'm sure most ppl here would like if they didn't know it was some rand endorsed.  you should never put someone's elses interests above your own, and altruism is evil...  intriguing to me

on the surface sounds a little bit psychotic, but i'm sure most of us here live our lives by it

The Fountainhead was the better out of two imo.

I would even rate Anthem higher just because it gets to the fucking point.

Speaking of getting to the point, y'know that 90 page long speech by John in Atlas Shrugged which is basically Rand's manifesto of Objectivism, well, as it's the whole raison d'etre of the book and all they can hardly cut it out, but it's not exactly gonna make for gripping cinema, is it?

i read somewhere that if someone were to recite that speech, it'd take 3 hours.  talk about a good time for a piss break
