Movie Buff
« on: February 14, 2011, 01:43:54 PM »
http://www.250films.net/list/

How well did you do? I got a pitiful 94; frankly anything less than half is a wasted life. Sure, there some films on that list that i have no intention of watching and are only on that list because only film studies student have given them high votes, but horrifically, i've never watched a hitchcock film. So partially its my fault. Still, there's a fair few chaplin films, and i always prefered buster keaton or the marx brothers if you go a bit later on; so i dont feel that bad.

I've got some holidays from work over the next few days and am pretty much housebound having torn my hamstring last week, so i'm gonna try and fill in some blanks. Anyway, rather than trying to justify having watched wayne's world II hundreds of times rather than having watched casablanca all the way through, i'm asking the great and the good of cd.com how they do on IMDB's list and if there is anything you feel especially ashamed to have not seen.

132.

I actually picked up a couple of Hitchcock box sets just before Christmas or my score would have been quite a bit lower.

Also, how the fuck did Snatch get into the top 250?  That's a diabolical movie.

Of the Chaplins that made the list, Modern Times is possibly the greatest example of Marxist alienation ever put to cinema and The Great Dictator shows what an incredible human being and talented dramatic actor he was when he got the chance; they're absolute must sees.

there's always lots of new films on the list that will slip off. my main gripe about the list is the utter lack of comedy. spinal tap, blazing saddles, young frankenstein, all missing. beyond that, given its highly contentious nature, i think its actually a very decent list.

click each of the movies you've seen and it'll total them up for you. any less that 83 and you're not allowed seconds on dessert.

was gonna say all the LOTR movies, number 12 and 31?  but then again i havent watched them so i shouldn't make that judgement.

so out of the ones i've seen, shawshank being #1 is absurd.  top 250?  yeah, but not 1.  no way is pulp fiction that high, and none of nolan's movies should be in top 10.  Inception shouldn't even be top 250 to me.  numbers 14 and 27 are ok, i like fincher, but they should be in the back of the list, not top 100.  and social network shouldn't have made it.

id also scratch Usual suspects, bourne ultimatum, res dogs, and memento off completely, and move the graduate up A LOT higher.  it just seems to me that 19 year old boys made the list

fair enough. bear in mind that the list is fluid and constantly changing as people vote, in 6 months time most of the movies from the last 12 months will have slipped.

i think the thing with shawshank is that few people dislike it to any great degree which means it wont have gotten many poor votes; other movies will draw more extreme opinions and will get lots of votes that drag them down.
