Tsunami Hits Japan After 8.9 Megaquake
« on: March 11, 2011, 03:52:18 AM »
SKY NEWS VIDEO

A 33ft tsunami has killed at least eight people as it swept over Japan's northeastern coast after a 8.9 magnitude megaquake near the capital Tokyo.

The huge wave hit the port in the country's Sendai city, sending ships crashing into the shore and carrying cars and buildings through the streets of towns.

Mass evacuations are taking place after Tsunami warnings were issued for the entire Pacific coast.

The earthquake has obliterated Tokyo's Disneyland car park and caused large fires at sites including an oil refinery in nearby Iichihara.

Large aftershocks continue to hit the capital, following an initial tremor so strong it was felt 1,500 miles away in the Chinese capital Beijing.

Japanese prime minister Naoto Kan said there had been no nuclear plant radiation leak caused by the disaster.

But airports and portshave been closed and the Shinkansen 'bullet' train stopped.

Millions of homes are without power and Tokyo's fire department reported several people were injured when a roof caved in at a graduation ceremony in the city.

Among the countries issued with alerts from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii are Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hawaii and Australia.

Russia, South America, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas have also been put on alert.

Russian authorities on the fareastern Sakhalin Island and nearby territories have evacuated some 11,0000 residents from coastal areas in anticipation of tsunami waves.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety after the tremor struck.

Experts say the earthquake is the world's fifth strongest since 1900.

The Japanese government's top spokesman, Yukio Edano, said the country was sending troops to the quake-hit area to join relief efforts.

TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of the city.

Police and coast guard officials said they were assessing possible damage from the quake

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.

A megaquake is defined as one exceeding seven on the Richter scale.

Huge explosion at Japan nuclear plant

May God bless prayers, if I was GNR, I'd definitely make If The World video out of this.

Its not actually a troll. It genuinely makes me upset that people dont see the irony in praying to god to save victims of earthquakes.

Lulz.

A man in all likelihood far smarter than any of us once wrote a novel about the stupidity of turning to God after an earthquake and its resultant tsunami destroyed a major city.  These days it's considered one of the funniest and most important literary texts ever written.  Hopefully you've heard of it at some point...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candide

"The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, tsunami, and resulting fires of All Saints' Day, had a strong influence on theologians of the day and on Voltaire, who was himself disillusioned by them. The earthquake had an especially large effect on the contemporary doctrine of optimism, a philosophical system which implies that such events should not occur. Optimism is founded on the theodicy of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz that says all is for the best because God is a benevolent deity. This concept is often put into the form, "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds" (Fr. "Tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes"). Philosophers had trouble fitting the horrors of this earthquake into the optimist world view."

Thats great, im sure most understand god is not going to reverse the earthquake. Im not much for religion either, but in this case it is just well wishing, no need for a religious debate. Also im sure you understand the prayers can also be intended for the dead, for eternal peace, yadda yadda...

It seems trollish to me to put a negative spin on someones well wishes, or turn this thread into a religious argument. Jmho

it wasnt me that brought god into this. to do so is thoroughly distasteful to me. And its not 'just as well wishing' cos it doesnt make a blind bit of difference beyond salving the conscience.

i'd say evoking the power of god after an earthquake that raised the entire pacific ocean by three feet and sent tsunami warnings from alaska to new zealand is to have a skewed view of god.

I feel like a debate here could go too many  different ways. To me your intolerance of referencing a higher power as a means of good spirits is as bad as cramming in your beliefs every where you go.

Right, because brave and selfless captain 2NaFish already sent a dosen of helicopters and of course, sacrified his own life saving the disaster victims.
