news international
« on: July 19, 2011, 03:41:35 AM »
Surprised this hasn't popped up. Anyway, rather than recap the last ten days, this is where we are....

Interesting "warts and all" article from Jonathan Powell, Blair's chief of staff. Basically, it admits that News International got their way irrespective of who was in power.

Rupert and James Murdoch are due to answer questions this afternoon too which should be fun. Oh, and the guy who broke the story was found dead last night, but the police say its not suspicious...

The problem that i have with this is how the rest of the media have been quick to come out and claim how ethical they are, rather than acknowledge themselves as war mongering entities who prop up and "maintain the key structures of power" - quoting from this very excellent article, http://johnhilley.blogspot.com/2011/07/rusbridgers-alert-to-cameron-guardian.html

very early on(well, since it got taken seriously two weeks ago), several non-NI papers were conspicuous by their lack of hacking stories. others went full pelt - but perhaps they were just trying to kybosh the bskyb deal and didnt realise how big it would get. It certainly seems that this stretches in to various corridors of power.

There's so much more juicyness to come out.

However, it's all slightly worrying what is actually going on, because there is still loads being covered up, a lot of which will not even come to the surface.
Dont take this the wrong way Karin but your friends look like they are wild in bed, I mean pure filthy.

The non NI papers clearly see an opportunity. These are big businesses, NI is such a vast and powerful creature that any challenge to that/dissolving of that power will happily be championed by the rest of the media. It makes them look good and will doubtless help their profit margins. These same media outlets, Guardian, BBC etc... are happy to run this stuff - and im not saying it isn't significant per se - but how can an ethical, power challenging media not run this story...? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/amnesty-questions-claim-that-gaddafi-ordered-rape-as-weapon-of-war-2302037.html (credit to Cockburn for doing so)

I also linked the wrong blog earlier, although the quote was from the correct one. This is what i meant to post. http://johnhilley.blogspot.com/2011/07/news-of-world-scandal-disguises-ethical.html Worth a read if anyone has 5 minutes spare.

the closest was that one person asked if he qualified the support of any of his papers with any conditions. it was denied and moved on.

outside that, nothing close to any of them.

Still, its a tremendous watch.

I've had to stop watching, but Twitter just exploded with reports that someone just hit Murdoch with a custard pie. can anyone confirm.

if so, its a victory for slapstick over the media. If this was in nutshell Malone, he'd be dead.

I was watching it as it happened.  They continued after a break with Murdoch out of his suit coat.  It had custard all over it.   Other reports said it was "a cup of foam".   Thought it was pretty funny. At one point the news was trying to figure out if "his chinese wife?"  was trying to save him or if she was thrown into them.  Too bad the camera angle sucked, but you can clearly see the white substance on the coat.

Credit for Al Jazeera to have a camera to a view where they held the "protester".  He was in cuffs with his whole face looking like it was covered in cocaine. The police were kind enough to wife off the 'protesters' his face and and his shirt.
What are your current thoughts about Kurt Cobain?

Axl: I said I'm going on ChiDem now and he said whatever & walked away other than that I've been busy.
