Van Halen to Rock the Grammys?
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:42:16 PM »
Another week, another Van Halen story. Rumor has it that VH will appear at the November 30 Grammy Nominations Concert at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater to announce that they will perform at the actual Grammy awards in February. The buzz around town is that they will also use this opportunity to announce details of their pending album and tour.

During an announcement regarding the hour-long nominations concert, the Recording Academy said the show would feature “a special live announcement from a truly iconic group regarding their historic band reunion set to take place.” The organization later dropped either an extremely blatant hint or the greatest red herring in the history of rock music with the following tweet: “Who do u predict the reuniting band will be @ The Grammy Noms... Does this hint make u wanna ‘Jump’ and ‘Dance the Night Away?’”

Meanwhile, MelodicRock.com is reporting a few additional rumors: that the band filmed a video for the forthcoming album’s first single a few weeks ago in L.A., and that the album could include a cover tune, with David Lee Roth demoing several in New York City to send to the band back in L.A. to select from.

MelodicRock.com is reporting a few additional rumors

That site has a very bad rep for getting Van Halen fans' hopes up with "insider" rumours and unfounded speculation.

VAN HALEN With New Record Label INTERSCOPE: First Photo Available - Nov. 17, 2011
The first photo of the four members of VAN HALEN and their new partners at the Interscope label can be seen below.

Why did VAN HALEN back out of a deal with Columbia Records and sign with Interscope at the last minute? According to The Hollywood Reporter, singer David Lee Roth was the deciding factor. Roth, who has separate management, legal representation and accountants from the rest of the group, apparently wanted to sign with a label based on the West Coast. A source said, "He was never on board (with Columbia). It was as complicated as anyone would imagine, when one side says black, the other says white. The label was pretty skeptical that things would work out."

In stepped Interscope and its parent company Universal Music "at the 11th hour." While Columbia's main operation is located in New York, Interscope is based in Los Angeles and presented the band with "a global plan that included extensive marketing, merchandising, touring and, of course, recordings."

The rest of VAN HALEN — guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen — wanted to keep Roth happy as well. He rejoined the group in 2007 after 23 years apart.

The deal was finalized this week and marks the first time VAN HALEN has recorded away from Warner Bros. Records, which signed the group in 1977.

The new VAN HALEN album, its first with Roth since 1984 was released on the last day of 1983, will reportedly come out in 2012, possibly in February.

Although it's been strongly hinted that the group will make a "special announcement" on November 30 at the Grammy Awards nominations concert, a source told Rolling Stone magazine that the band's appearance was not happening. Reps for the Grammy Awards have not commented.

Captured at an undisclosed venue in Los Angeles, are (left to right) Alex Van Halen; Wolfgang Van Halen; Eddie Van Halen; Jimmy Iovine, Chairman, Interscope Geffen A&M Records; Irving Azoff, Executive Chairman of Live Nation Entertainment and Chairman and CEO of the Front Line Management Group; Steve Berman, Vice Chairman, Interscope Geffen A&M Records; David Lee Roth; and Jim Urie, President and CEO, Universal Music Group Distribution.

onight’s the night! As previously reported on the CR website, Van Halen are to make ‘a special live announcement’ at this evening’s Grammy Nominations Ceremony.

If the rumour mill is correct, the band will unveil details of their new album and much-anticipated 2012 world tour.

According an official press release, the Grammy Nominations Ceremony – which is set to take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles – ‘will feature a special live announcement from a truly iconic group regarding their historic band reunion set to take place on the Grammy stage on February 12, 2012′ [when the actual Grammys are due to take place].

This was accompanied by the tease below on the Grammys’ Twitter page:

van halen reunite, grammy nominations twitter

We think you might be able to watch the Grammy Nominations Ceremony live by going here. (Don’t blame us if you can’t!)

Van Halen have signed a new record deal with Interscope Records for the release of their first studio album with David Lee Roth in nearly 30 years. Go here for details.

Van Halen Announcement: What Went Wrong?

Van Halen Announcement: What Went Wrong?

Van Halen’s much-anticipated appearance at the Grammy Nominations Concert last night never happened.

Despite all the hints and reports that the band would turn up to announce details of their new album and tour, none of the four were present.

So what happened? This is what Neil Portnow, chairman of The Recording Academy, who run the Grammys, waffled:

“In the world of creativity, everything is fluid. In the process of discussions that we had been having with an expectation that perhaps we would be at a point tonight where the artist involved and we, moving forward, would be ready to announce [a reunion], they weren’t quite at that point. So it’s live television, we go on to the next act. It’s rock and roll and so on. That being said, we were genuine about the intention and we are genuine about the discussion.”

Now it appears Van Halen will make their big announcement in January.

To their credit, the Van Halen News Desk (which is not directly associated with the band) was sceptical about the projected Grammys appearance from the start.

Below the headline ‘Duped By The Grammys?’, the website issued the following update while speculation mounted yesterday:

‘Rampant rumours have Van Halen making an appearance at the Grammy Nominations tonight to announce their forthcoming album and tour. It was the Grammy’s themselves who started the rumour. Yet some of our sources have been telling us that they can’t confirm the rumoured appearance, and others have flat out told us that it was never anything but a rumour in the first place, started by the Grammys. Whatever the case, other than the original rumour, we haven’t heard anything that would lead us to believe that the band is involved in the show tonight. Put it this way… if the band does actually make an appearance they are much better at keeping secrets than we’ve ever imagined!’

VH are one of my favourite bands (guess y'all know that from my username here ;) ), and EVH a definite influence on my playing-style. Sadly but not unexpectedly tho, another false start (irrespective of where this rumour originated from). However, considering everything "VH" that we have been audience to, particularly over the last decade or so, I many years ago decided that nothing short of new music to listen to really any longer warranted any expenditure of excitable emotion. And even when new music comes out, I will listen to it firstly before shelling out any $$ for it or any subsequent tour, as VHIII was such a terrible record (and I have much respect for Gary Cherone), and their accompanying tour was the most disappointing gig I have ever seen.

Sadly however, I would not at all be surprised if Jan 2012 becomes March, then May, then whenever...
