Some fans (including me) are thinking about paying for a paid advertisement at the L.A. Weekly to be printed on 02/06/12 edition of the LA Weekly, to celebrate Axl’s 50th birthday.
As some of you know (n’ were even part of that like myself) some fans did something like this back in 2002.
We could do something like this now – I think it’s a nice gift we all could give to Axl.
I thought about something like that:
It’s pretty simple – if any of you guys have a better idea or at least the proper tools to make this thing look cooler (I believe any kid who’s into technology can improve that in 1000% lol) be my guest n’ do it.
What's written can be changed too - it's just an idea.
The L.A. Weekly charges U$ 2,900.00 for the ad (feel free to ask them yourself if you want at
jhill@laweekly.com) – Check it out below.
We can charge the fans who want to be a part of it for a specific amount ( U$ 10.00 per fan – we would need 290 fans or U$ 20.00 per fan – 145 fans – n’ work on the art so all the names of the fans would be included). Another idea is doing like the old ad from 2002 – charge the fans by each character written, so the fans who want to write bigger messages, pay more. Those who can’t pay much, would pay less – but then we would have to jump from a simple ad into something more advanced like the old ad. Keep in mind that time is short n’ maybe we don’t have enough time to do something more complex!
We also need someone who can handle the payments with a Paypal account in the US, much better if it’s someone from the LA area / California. The person would be also in charge of sending the newspapers.
In case the ad doesn’t happen by any reason, the person who’s in charge sends the payments back).
About shipping costs to send the newspapers worldwide to the fans who participate, I made a quick research at Ebay - people from California (places such as San Marino, Long Beach n' Fresno to name a few) charge from 6.95 to 9.25 to send a CD to anywhere in the world - Asia, Israel, Europe, South America, Australia, Russia, etc). The only places they charge for less are Canada n' Porto Rico (around 4.50).
So it's safe to say we can send around 7.00 for shipping costs + the price of a LA Weekly.
Hope it works, Axl deserves a lot more but at least it’s something!

LA Weekly does offer a discounted Emerging Artist rate, which is the lowest rate we offer in the concerts/club section, and if this is a fan dedication ad, we'll go ahead and extend you this discounted rate of $2900 for a Full Page 4 color ad. (The normal cost is $5351, fyi).
The deadline to set up account and pay for the ads is Monday, 12noon, prior to that Thursdays publication, and we do have space available for the 2/6/12 issue..
Camera Ready art is due Monday, by 5pm, prior to that Thursdays publication.
