I hate haters when it comes to Axls Voice
« on: February 01, 2012, 04:41:14 PM »
I don't know why people are still giving Axl shit for his voice.

Listen to Jungle and Maddy from the Iclip shows.  He still has major rasp.  When he sings clean people say he sounds like Micky Mouse... They even said Axl mouse on patience? where he sings deep... wtf  don't make sense to me  And then he does the rasp, they say he doesn't got it any more. Such as Axls voice is flailing in Jungle.

To me Axl was very smart on this last tour.  He chose which songs he wanted to rasp on, and he chose which songs he wanted sing clean.  To sustain a three hour show and preserve his voice he decided to be very dedicated upon choosing which to do which on.  Such as Estranged.  he sang it totally clean, which for a ballad is cool, also mostly does the same on November Rain except for the end.  Back in the days it was all rasp and I'm sure if he was doing a three song set now a days he could dedicate himself to all rasp.

But let's face it... Axl wants to put on a hell of a show.. And he can't do that if he loses his voice after 45 minutes.  Like back in the Illusions tours where he just lost his voice.  He's being smart now a days.. Giving people what they want without having to say... good night I have no voice I'm going home.

I think a lot of us were spoiled by the 2010 shows especially at the dublin 02 arena.  that's my favorite boot to listen to cuz audio wise it's classic axl all the time.  He was pist off, maybe that's why he sustained the rasp the whole show.

But there were also shows in 2010 where axl was losing his voice.  Sturgis?  Where it was like back in the 90s , oh man his voice is shot he sounds like shit.

I think Axl is giving his all.  But I also think maybe in the 2010 shows he learned something from over extending himself.  I am just grateful he still has the demon voice from hell and he can do it on command.

But I am mad appreciative that he's choosing to conserve it for songs and parts where people expect it.

Let's face it... to do that scream, axl has always had to hurt his own throat. and as a fan I respect that.  So I wish people would stop giving him all this shit.

His voice is older... his scream sounds older, but he's still got it.  Just because he doesn't do it on every song or chorus or verse doesn't mean he's not capable, it just means he's being smart.

With this new band, his music on chinese sounds like a band live now vs on the album where it sounds  contrived

And the older songs got a newer flavor.

This band kicks ass.

So I hate all these you tubers... lemme put my tube in your space Axl once said.

They say he don't got it.

He does, they just don't appreciate the self abuse he has to put himself thru to give it to us.  So......

Fuck the haters.

Goodnight I'm going home

I got obsessed one day and showed my former g/f (RIP Love) who i took to gnr in 2011, audio samples crossing tokyo 92 ycbm and dublin 2010 ycbm and she couldn't tell which was old and which was new :)

From a technical point of view, in many ways Axl sings better now. One of the problems with distorted singing, or 'rasp', is that it can be hard for the singer to go clean again if they always distort their voice (in the upper ranges, that is - about E4 and upwards on a piano/keyboard). M. Shadows, as great as he is, is an example. I've not heard him hit a clean high note. On the UYI tour, Axl was all rasp. Now he can make a stylistic choice more readily, it seems.

Also, the 'mickey mouse' thing - consider that, in a mix - with drums, bass, guitars etc... especially live, the lower harmonics of his voice will be a lot less audible. If he was singing acapella next to you it wouldn't be 'mickey mouse'. There's more factors that that also - Axl runs around way more than most on stage, which is hard to do while singing. It takes more support and effort to do those thick, raspy high notes with full power and volume. Running around doesn't help much. Plus, i don't see anyone calling Robert Plant or Myles Kennedy 'mickey mouse' voices. I don't think their voices can go as full sounding as Axl in the upper registers. They are superb vocalists, however.

Moondogg, come back when you can make a comment about axl's hair or sumfin. that was far too informed and considered.

Jimb0 I love this thread ! Very great points and deffinatly agree! I don't have time to get "in deep" right now with my thoughts/opinion on this! *and also typing from a phone * but you are right 2011 he nailed jungle every damn time and when he wanted too! I do believe rocket queen/YCBM/TIL were delivered with more "safe technique"  this last time around And rightfully so for 3 hr show every night! Amazing talent  :O
But I checked out some Dublin bootlegs and he sounds like he did in 88!;)

The best "new Guns" Axl voice was in 2010.

HAHA that is great 2na.

I defy anyone to  go to see the band live and leave with the impression that Axl's voice sounds less that great.  Youtube is not a total gig experience, buying a ticket and absorbing the show is.  Fact is, when you are there in person, Axl and the others for that matter, NAIL IT.

To add to that, yeah sure he takes a few more gasping breaths, and yes, he may shorten certain screams and hold back a little during some songs...  but to sound the way he does at this point in time is amazing when you consider he ain't a fresh faced young man anymore.
