go swimming for ages, eventually you'll get this horrible spasming pain in the base of your foot and start flopping around and drowning like a spastic coz it's too painful to do anything else. that's cramp.

You fucking know when you have cramp! Doesnt matter if you have never had it in your life, when you get it you fucking know, it hurts like no other pain and it hurts bad. Pins and needles is just numbness and a prickly feeling.
